Macon, GeorgiaMacon

Give Macon one full day plus a night, two if you add the Ocmulgee Mounds and the music sights: a car is needed for anything outside downtown.
Macon is a mid-size Georgia city on I-75 about 85 mi (1 h 20 min) south of Atlanta, known for its cherry blossom season, Native American earthworks at Ocmulgee Mounds, and its role in Southern rock and soul music. Downtown is compact and walkable; the sights that matter most sit outside it, so most travellers do best with a car and one or two nights.

About Macon, Georgia
Macon sits in Georgia's Classic Heartland and anchors a metropolitan area of roughly 400,000 people that takes in Warner Robins. Downtown holds antebellum homes, cathedrals and other historic buildings put up by the city's elite, among them the Woodruff House, the Hay House and the Cannonball House. The city is known for its spring cherry blossom celebration, which stands out for the sheer number of trees spread across Macon: more than 275,000 Yoshino cherry trees, the basis for its self-styled title, "Cherry Blossom Capital of the World."
The downtown core is compact enough to cover on foot, but sites beyond it, such as the Ocmulgee Indian Mounds and the Museum of Arts and Sciences, are easiest to reach by car. Interstates 75 and 16 serve the city, and many visitors fly into Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, 80 miles north, then drive or take a shuttle.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
