Manchester, New HampshireManchester

Give Manchester one full day, two nights: Millyard museum, Currier art, a Fisher Cats game. Base here only if you have a car.
Manchester is New Hampshire's largest city, built on the Amoskeag mills along the Merrimack River, about 1 hour north of Boston by car. Downtown Elm Street is walkable and the Millyard holds the museums; everything else — the airport hotels, the speedway, the outlet strip — needs a car. Most travellers pass through for a night or use it as a cheaper, quieter alternative to Boston Logan.

About Manchester, New Hampshire
Manchester is the largest city in New Hampshire, with a population of 116,000 recorded in 2020. It sits along the Merrimack River and lies roughly an hour north of Boston by car, reachable via Interstate 93 and Route 3. The city once hosted the biggest textile operation anywhere, and its service-based economy now includes Southern New Hampshire University and St. Anselm College. Downtown Elm Street has grown more walkable, while the airport and other outlying areas call for a vehicle. The Manchester-Boston Regional Airport serves as a lower-cost, less hectic option to Boston's Logan.
Winters here are cold and snowy, and summers warm to hot with humidity. Daytime summer heat indices average near 84 °F, with nights around 64 °F; heat waves can push indices toward 97 °F or above.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
A car is the practical answer: downtown sights are walkable but the airport, malls and McIntyre ski area are not. MTA buses run hourly on weekdays, one-way $2, and stop around 6PM; the airport bus runs only Monday–Friday. Taxis and rideshare work but are limited late at night. Check downtown parking signs and meters before you leave the car.
