    Go early or late; a 10-minute look from the outside at a prefabricated iron house on Avenida Samora Machel; interior access is not guaranteed.

  2. Mercado Central

    Go before 10:30: fruit, fish and spice stalls in a covered market; cash only, keep bags in front, and leave before the midday heat.

  3. Catedral de Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Maputo Cathedral)

    Go for 15 minutes on the Independence Square loop: a mid-20th-century cathedral with a tall white front and a cool interior; skip it during Mass.

  4. Jardim Tunduru (Tunduru Gardens)

    Go at 08:00 or 16:30 for 30 minutes: a shaded botanical garden in the Baixa with big trees and benches, the best free rest in the centre.
