Everything the tour says, in order. Read it instead of listening if you prefer.

  1. Before you start

Welcome to the Baixa (Independence Square) audio walk in Maputo. 4 stops: Casa de Ferro (Iron House), Mercado Central, Catedral de Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Maputo Cathedral) and Jardim Tunduru (Tunduru Gardens). Morning cluster: Casa de Ferro, the cathedral and Independence Square, then Mercado Central; flat, grid streets, shade under the trees; 2–3 hours.

Independence Square, Casa de Ferro, the cathedral, Jardim Tunduru and Mercado Central (approximate bounds; field-verify). Underfoot: paved, broken in places; slope: flat; shade: medium.

Maputo is a coastal capital with a Portuguese colonial grid, a revolutionary street map and a strong local culture of music, painting and seafood. It is small enough to learn in two mornings and rewards travellers who go slowly, early and by taxi.

Before you start: Do not photograph police, soldiers or government buildings around the square. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.

  2. 1. Casa de Ferro (Iron House)

    Casa de Ferro

    Look for

    • Iron facade and balcony
    • Interior rooms (if open)
    • Iron facade from the square side

Stop 1 of 4: Casa de Ferro (Iron House). Locally, Casa de Ferro. Arrival point: Walk from Independence Square.

Go early or late; a 10-minute look from the outside at a prefabricated iron house on Avenida Samora Machel; interior access is not guaranteed.

Look for Iron facade and balcony: The panels and the rivets; look at the roof line. Look for Interior rooms (if open): Small rooms; check whether a guide is available. For a photo: Iron facade from the square side, morning, sun behind you.

It has Independence Square with City Hall and the cathedral, the Casa de Ferro, Mercado Central and Jardim Tunduru, and the fort and railway station on the southern edge. The Casa de Ferro, the Iron House, is a prefabricated metal building on Independence Square, also often credited to Eiffel's workshop. Stories say it was too hot to live in, which is plausible for an iron house on the Indian Ocean.

Do not photograph guards or government offices next door. Quiet outside office hours. Allowed of the exterior; ask before photographing the interior.

Walk:Next, stop 2: Mercado Central. It's about 6 minutes on foot, about 250 metres to the south-east. Route: Walk west. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  3. 2. Mercado Central

    Look for

    • Fruit and vegetable aisles
    • Fish hall
    • Spice and dry goods stalls
    • Stalls piled with fruit
    • Market facade from the avenue

Stop 2 of 4: Mercado Central. Arrival point: Walk west from Casa de Ferro.

Go before 10:30: fruit, fish and spice stalls in a covered market; cash only, keep bags in front, and leave before the midday heat. On a first visit: The best picture of daily Maputo.

Look for Fruit and vegetable aisles: Mangoes, bananas, cashews and greens. Look for Fish hall: Fresh prawns and fish on ice (check hours). Look for Spice and dry goods stalls: Piri-piri, dried fish and cashews. For a photo: Stalls piled with fruit, early morning. For a photo: Market facade from the avenue, morning.

The Mercado Central of 1901 is a rounded, airy building of stone and iron that still serves as the main market.

Ask before photographing vendors; buy something small if they agree. Busiest 08:00–11:00; quieter in the afternoon. Ask before photographing people and stalls; some vendors refuse. The market opened in 1901 and sells fruit, vegetables, fish, spices, cashew nuts and household goods.

Walk:Next, stop 3: Catedral de Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Maputo Cathedral). It's about 12 minutes on foot, about 300 metres to the north. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  4. 3. Catedral de Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Maputo Cathedral)

    Catedral de Maputo

    Look for

    • Nave and altar
    • Facade
    • Square benches
    • Facade from the square
    • Interior

Stop 3 of 4: Catedral de Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Maputo Cathedral). Locally, Catedral de Maputo. Arrival point: Praça da Independência.

Go for 15 minutes on the Independence Square loop: a mid-20th-century cathedral with a tall white front and a cool interior; skip it during Mass.

Look for Nave and altar: A tall white interior. Look for Facade: The front on the square. Look for Square benches: Shade under trees. For a photo: Facade from the square, morning. For a photo: Interior, outside Mass.

Cover shoulders and knees; no photos during Mass. Sunday Mass and weddings on Saturday close the nave to visitors. Allowed outside services; no flash. The cathedral was built in the 1940s in a plain, tall style with a white facade; it is the seat of the Archdiocese of Maputo (check). It stands on Independence Square opposite the City Hall. Inside it is cool and quiet; a good rest from the heat.

Walk:Next, stop 4: Jardim Tunduru (Tunduru Gardens). It's about 6 minutes on foot. Route: Walk north-east. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  5. 4. Jardim Tunduru (Tunduru Gardens)

    Jardim Tunduru

    Look for

    • Shaded main path
    • Palm and plant collection
    • Quiet corner benches
    • Trees and paths
    • Palms

Stop 4 of 4: Jardim Tunduru (Tunduru Gardens). Locally, Jardim Tunduru. Arrival point: Avenida 24 de Julho or Avenida Samora Machel side.

Go at 08:00 or 16:30 for 30 minutes: a shaded botanical garden in the Baixa with big trees and benches, the best free rest in the centre. On a first visit: A rest between sights.

Look for Shaded main path: Old trees and benches. Look for Palm and plant collection: A small botanical collection. Look for Quiet corner benches: A rest spot. For a photo: Trees and paths, morning light. For a photo: Palms, late afternoon.

Do not walk in the garden after dark. Lunch-hour workers on weekdays; quiet early and late. Allowed; ask before photographing people. Tunduru is the city's central botanical garden, with big old trees, palms and quiet paths, established in the colonial period. It is a good shade stop between the market and the station.
