Summary by passport, month and cost

Use this as a planning grid, not a booking list. The Adrar is the reason most people come; the coast is what you add when the trip is already long enough to absorb a second region.

The places, in the order most trips run them

Nouakchott is the entry point and worth 1–2 nights: the fish market at Plage des Pêcheurs fills up in the late afternoon when the boats come in, and the National Museum and Grande Mosquée are easy half-day stops. From here the road turns inland to Atar, the Adrar's market town and the base for everything around it.

Chinguetti is the headline: a caravan town with manuscript libraries whose keepers show the collections by hand, usually in the morning. Plan 2 nights so you get a full day plus a dune evening. Ouadane, a stone ksar on a cliff at the edge of the erg, needs 1–2 nights and sits near the Richat Structure; some travel advice puts areas east of it under stronger warnings, so check before committing. Terjit is a palm oasis with warm springs in a gorge — 1 night is enough, and it pairs well with a night camping in the Amatlich or Azougui dunes.

On the coast, Banc d'Arguin is the bird and Imraguen fishing-village stop, best October–March and needing 2 nights with arranged access. Nouadhibou, the northern port with the ship graveyard and the iron-ore train terminus, is 1 night and can be reached by a 5-hour drive or a flight back to Nouakchott. Oualata and Tichitt, the eastern ksour, are historically the finest caravan architecture in the country but fall under travel warnings — treat them as a separate decision, not a default stop.

  • Nouakchott — 1–2 nights, fish market, museum, mosque
  • Atar — 1 night, market town and Adrar gateway
  • Terjit — 1 night, oasis springs in a gorge
  • Chinguetti — 2 nights, libraries and dunes
  • Ouadane — 1–2 nights, cliff ksar and the Richat
  • Banc d'Arguin — 2 nights, birds and Imraguen villages
  • Nouadhibou — 1 night, port and ore train

Notes before you commit

Inland travel in the Adrar is done with a licensed agency, a 4x4 and a driver; independent desert driving is not a sensible plan for a first visit. The cool season is the only comfortable window for the desert, and nights still get cold. Nouakchott and the coast run longer, roughly November–April.

Some regions carry 'avoid all travel' or 'reconsider' advice that changes with the security situation, and Ouadane and the east are the usual edge of that. Check current government advice for each region before you fix an itinerary, and buy travel insurance that actually covers the activities and regions you plan. The e-visa must be arranged before you fly — there has been no visa on arrival since January 2025.

  • Book the agency before the cool season fills up
  • Confirm region-by-region advice close to departure
  • Insurance: check desert and remote-area cover
  • E-visa before flying, no visa on arrival

Questions people ask

What are the best places to visit in Mauritania?

Chinguetti, Ouadane and Terjit in the Adrar, with Atar as the gateway; Nouakchott for the fish market and museum; Banc d'Arguin for birds; and Nouadhibou for the port and iron-ore train. The Adrar is the core of a first trip.

How many days do you need in Mauritania?

Seven days covers Nouakchott and the Adrar loop. Ten days adds Ouadane. Fourteen days adds Banc d'Arguin and Nouadhibou. Shorter than a week means choosing either the desert or the coast, not both.

Which areas of Mauritania suit a first visit?

Nouakchott and the Adrar (Atar, Chinguetti, Ouadane, Terjit) are the standard first-trip route, with a licensed guide and 4x4. Add Banc d'Arguin or Nouadhibou only with spare days. The eastern ksour are under travel warnings — check.

When is the best time to visit Mauritania?

November–February for the inland desert, when days are workable and nights are cold. Nouakchott and the coast are comfortable roughly November–April. The hot season makes Adrar travel unpleasant and some routes impractical.

Do you need a guide to visit the Adrar?

Yes in practice. Inland travel runs on licensed agencies with a 4x4 and driver, and the desert towns are reached over long unsignposted routes. Independent driving is not recommended for a first visit.

Is Mauritania safe for tourists?

Parts of the country carry serious travel warnings, and advice varies by region and changes over time. Check current government guidance for each area before booking, and avoid the zones flagged 'avoid all travel'.
