The Mekong Lowlands and Central Plains is the flat middle of Cambodia: the capital, the Mekong river towns and the rice plains that feed them. Most travellers cross it on the Phnom Penh–Siem Reap road or the Phnom Penh–Kratie river road. Treat it as a 2–4 night add-on to Phnom Penh, not a destination in itself, unless you want slow river towns and Khmer rural life at a low cost.

- Do not plan to see Phnom Penh, Kampong Cham and Kampong Thom in two days: each leg eats half a day.
- Rural roads can flood in the wet season (roughly June–October); buses slow down or reroute.
- Check your own government's travel advice and the current land-border status before any overland leg.
