Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…Mine-suspected land still exists in Bosnia and Herzegovin…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Balkans ↗Mine-suspected land still exists in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in pockets of Croatia's former front line: outside towns keep to tarmac and waymarked paths, and treat red triangle signs and taped-off fields as absolute.
  • Balkans ↗Serbia refuses onward entry to travellers who reached Kosovo from a third country and then try to cross straight into Serbia; route Kosovo–Serbia legs through North Macedonia or Montenegro, or start the loop in Serbia.
  • Balkans ↗Hire cars need written permission from the rental company and valid insurance for every country on the line; Kosovo sells its own border insurance and some contracts exclude Albania, Kosovo or Bosnia outright.
  • Romania ↗Romania is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Romanian sources for your passport.
  • Romania ↗Drivers need an electronic road vignette (rovinieta) on national roads; rental cars normally include it, but check.
  • Romania ↗Brown bears live in the Carpathians and sometimes enter towns and roadsides: never feed or approach them, and follow local warnings.

Moldavia is Romania's north-east: the counties of Suceava, Iași, Vaslui, Galați, Vrancea, Botoșani, Neamț and Bacău, on the borders with Moldova and Ukraine. It is not the painted-monastery Bucovina of most photos, though southern Bucovina sits inside it. The draw is Iași — the old capital, with the Palace of Culture and one of the country's best food scenes — plus the Ceahlău massif and Bicaz gorge, and wine country around Cotnari, Panciu, Odobești and Huși. It is far from Bucharest and Transylvania: come only if you have a second week, or if you are crossing to Chișinău.

  • Iași to Bucharest is about 6 hours by train or 5 by car; do not treat Moldavia as a day trip from the capital.
  • The Bicaz gorge road is narrow with traffic and rockfall signs; drive it in daylight, not after dark.
  • Ceahlău trails run 3½–6½ hours; start early and carry water — mountain rescue is 112.

Bags between cities

Luggage storage at Iași hotels is common; there is no useful same-day forwarding between Moldavian towns — travel with your bags.

Moldavia is colder in winter and hotter in summer than Transylvania; the monasteries and the gorge are best from May to October.
