Morro Bay

Give Morro Bay one full day and one night: kayak the estuary or walk the Embarcadero, then drive on. Two nights only if you add Montana de Oro or San Simeon.
Morro Bay is a small working harbour town of about 10,000 people on California's Central Coast, built around a 177 m volcanic rock at the bay mouth. The draw is the estuary, the sea otters and the walkable Embarcadero, not a long sightseeing list. Most travellers see it in a day and use it as a stop on Highway 1 between San Luis Obispo and Cambria.

About Morro Bay
Morro Bay is a town of 10,000 people in San Luis Obispo County, part of California's Central Coast. It sits on a bay whose entrance is marked by a volcanic rock 581 feet (177 m) tall, the feature the town is best known for. San Luis Obispo is a 15-minute drive away, while Fresno and Bakersfield are about 2½ hours off and Los Angeles and San Francisco roughly 4 hours.
The Embarcadero runs along the east side of the bay and forms the main visitor area, fronting a working port. Marine life in the bay includes sea otters and sea lions, and the town is a declared bird sanctuary. Morro Bay State Park lies to the south, and Morro Strand State Beach to the north.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
