Best places to visit in Mozambique: top cities, regions and sights

For a first trip, pick one stretch of coast: 2 nights in Maputo, then 4–5 nights at Tofo or Ponta do Ouro, or fly to Vilankulo for the Bazaruto Archipelago (3–5 nights). Add Gorongosa or Ilha de Moçambique on a longer trip. Skip the far north while advisories stand.

Summary by region

Mozambique is long and thin, and the road between the south and the centre is slow. Treat the country as three separate trips: the south (Maputo, Ponta do Ouro, Tofo, Inhambane), the centre (Vilankulo and Bazaruto, Gorongosa, Beira), and the north (Ilha de Moçambique and beyond, currently off the table for most travellers).

The table below is the short version: what each place is for, how long to stay, and when it works.

Nights are a working minimum, not a maximum. Far-north plans depend on current security advice.

Step by step

Step 1: choose your coast. If you have 7 days, do Maputo (2 nights) and Tofo (5). If you have 10, add Vilankulo and Bazaruto (4 nights) and fly out of Vilankulo. If you have 14, start in the Kruger area, cross at Lebombo early, then Maputo, Ponta do Ouro, Tofo and Vilankulo.

Step 2: book the flights first. Maputo is the main international gateway; Vilankulo has an airport with connections to Johannesburg, and Inhambane serves Tofo. Long road legs eat days, so fly Maputo–Inhambane or Maputo–Vilankulo and keep driving for the south only.

Step 3: fix the anchor nights. Dive and whale-shark trips at Tofo and Bazaruto sell out in high season, and Gorongosa lodges are limited. Lock those dates, then fill in Maputo and Inhambane around them.

Step 4: build in a buffer. Cyclone season runs roughly November–April and can close roads and cancel boats; a spare day at the end protects your flight home.

Step 5: check the north separately. Ilha de Moçambique is a genuine highlight, but the provinces around it carry standing advisories. Only go if your government's advice and your insurer both allow it.

Notes

Distances look short on the map and are not. Tofo to Vilankulo is about 4–5 hours by road; Maputo to Tofo is a full day or a short flight. Drive in daylight, avoid the dark, and use a 4x4 for Ponta do Ouro and park tracks.

Money: the metical is the local currency, and cards work in Maputo hotels and larger lodges but not at beach stalls or park gates. Carry cash for fuel, park fees and small purchases.

Health and safety: malaria is present in much of the country, including the coast and Gorongosa, so take advice before you go. The sea is the other risk: currents at Tofo and Ponta do Ouro are strong, and dive operators set their own rules for a reason.

Language: Portuguese is the official language; English is common in hotels and dive shops, less so elsewhere. A few Portuguese phrases go a long way.

Insurance: standard policies often exclude diving, and may exclude travel against government advice. Check both before you book the north.

  • Fly the long legs; drive only in the south and only in daylight.
  • Book dive, whale-shark and Gorongosa nights before the rest of the trip.
  • Carry cash for park fees, fuel and beach villages.
  • Keep a spare day for weather delays in cyclone season.
  • Confirm your insurance covers diving and your route.

FAQ

Questions people ask

What are the best places to visit in Mozambique?

For most first trips: Maputo (2 nights), Tofo or Ponta do Ouro (4–5), and Vilankulo with the Bazaruto Archipelago (3–5). Add Gorongosa National Park or Ilha de Moçambique if you have 10–14 days. The far north is best avoided while advisories stand.

How many days do you need in Mozambique?

Seven days covers Maputo and one beach. Ten days adds Vilankulo and Bazaruto. Fourteen days lets you combine the Kruger area, Maputo, Ponta do Ouro, Tofo and Vilankulo. Less than a week is not worth the flights unless you stay in one place.

Which areas of Mozambique suit a first visit?

The south and centre: Maputo, Ponta do Ouro, Inhambane, Tofo, Vilankulo and Bazaruto, plus Gorongosa if you want wildlife. These have the easiest flights, the most lodging and the fewest security concerns. Save the north for a later trip.

When is the best time to visit Mozambique?

May to November is the dry, cooler stretch and the best window for the coast, diving and parks. Gorongosa's roads are usually open roughly June to October. November to April brings heat, rain and cyclone risk.

Do I need to fly between the highlights?

For the long legs, yes. Maputo to Inhambane and Maputo or Tofo to Vilankulo are short flights that save a day each. Driving works in the south, but only in daylight and with a 4x4 for Ponta do Ouro and park tracks.

Is Ilha de Moçambique worth visiting?

It is one of the country's strongest sights, a UNESCO-listed stone town on a coral island. But it sits in the north, where security advisories apply. Go only if current government advice and your travel insurance both permit the route.
