Mozambique itineraries: 1 week, 2 weeks and 3 weeks
For 7 days, do Maputo 2 nights then Tofo 5 nights, flying Maputo–Inhambane or taking the daylight shuttle. Add Vilankulo and Bazaruto for 10–14 days. Do not drive the whole coast, and stay out of Cabo Delgado, Niassa and Nampula while advisories stand.

By passport, month and budget
The route you can actually do depends on three things: how you enter (visa and flight), which month you travel, and whether you can afford internal flights. Most nationalities need a visa for Mozambique; check the current rule and whether you can get it on arrival or online before booking anything.
Month sets the coast. May to November is the dry, cooler window with the clearest water for diving and the whale season from July to October. December to April is hot, wetter and cyclone season on the centre coast, which can close roads and dive boats.
Budget decides whether you fly or sit on a bus. Internal flights between Maputo, Inhambane and Vilankulo are the single biggest cost saver of time; a road shuttle is far cheaper but eats a full day each way.
| Trip length | Route | Nights split | How to move |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 days | Maputo → Tofo | Maputo 2, Tofo 5 | Fly or daylight shuttle Maputo–Inhambane |
| 10 days | Maputo → Tofo → Vilankulo and Bazaruto | Maputo 2, Tofo 4, Vilankulo 4 | Shuttle or fly to Inhambane; road Tofo–Vilankulo; fly out of Vilankulo |
| 14 days | Kruger → Maputo → Ponta do Ouro → Tofo → Vilankulo | Kruger 3, Maputo 2, Ponta 2, Tofo 4, Vilankulo 3 | Cross at Lebombo early; 4x4 for Ponta do Ouro; fly out of Vilankulo |
| 21 days | Add Gorongosa and Ilha de Moçambique | Add Gorongosa 2–3, Ilha 2–3 | Fly Beira or Nampula legs; check current advice for the north |
Nights are a starting split, not a rule. Road times are 2026 estimates (check).
7 days: Maputo and Tofo
Two nights in Maputo is enough to see the Baixa on foot, eat prawns at the fish market and hear live music, then leave. Give the rest of the week to Tofo: whale sharks, manta rays and humpbacks from May to November, with dive sites a short boat ride offshore.
The leg between them is the decision point. Flying Maputo–Inhambane takes about an hour and protects your beach days; the shuttle is roughly 7–8 hours in daylight (check current schedules). Do not attempt this drive at night.
If you would rather not move twice, swap Tofo for Ponta do Ouro or the Maputo National Park coast and stay south the whole week.
- Day 1–2: Maputo — Mercado Central, CFM railway station, Fortaleza, evening music
- Day 3: transfer to Tofo (fly or daylight shuttle)
- Day 4–6: dives or snorkelling, whale sharks, beach time
- Day 7: transfer back to Maputo or fly out of Inhambane
10 to 14 days: add Vilankulo and Bazaruto
Ten days lets you keep the Maputo–Tofo spine and add Vilankulo, the dhow base for the Bazaruto Archipelago. Tofo to Vilankulo is about 4–5 hours by road (check), so it is a half-day transfer rather than a flight.
From Vilankulo, three to four nights covers a dhow trip, Two Mile Reef and, in season, dugongs around Bazaruto and Benguerra. Fly out of Vilankulo to Johannesburg to avoid backtracking to Maputo.
With 14 days, start in the Kruger area of South Africa, cross at Lebombo early, then run Maputo, Ponta do Ouro, Tofo and Vilankulo. Ponta do Ouro needs a 4x4 and is best for dolphins and reef diving.
| Stop | Nights | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Kruger area (South Africa) | 3 | Big-game start before the border |
| Maputo | 2 | Architecture, seafood, music |
| Ponta do Ouro | 2 | Dolphins, diving, 4x4 access |
| Tofo | 4 | Whale sharks, mantas, humpbacks |
| Vilankulo and Bazaruto | 3 | Dhow trips, reefs, islands |
3 weeks: centre and, if advice allows, the north
Three weeks is enough to add Gorongosa National Park, reached via Beira, and Ilha de Moçambique, the UNESCO stone town on a coral island. Gorongosa's roads open roughly May to November; book the park's own camp or a lodge well ahead.
Ilha de Moçambique sits in Nampula province. The parent country guidance keeps travellers out of Cabo Delgado, Niassa and Nampula while advisories stand, so treat this leg as conditional: check your government's current advice before booking, and drop it if the advice has not changed.
A workable three-week shape is Kruger or Maputo first, the southern beaches, Vilankulo, then a flight to Beira for Gorongosa and a separate flight north only if advice allows. Fly every long leg; do not plan a single overland run down the coast.
- Week 1: Maputo and the southern coast (Ponta do Ouro, Tofo)
- Week 2: Vilankulo and Bazaruto, fly out or continue
- Week 3: Gorongosa via Beira; Ilha de Moçambique only if current advice allows
Notes
Do not try to drive the whole coast. Distances look short on a map but the road is slow, and night driving outside cities is not advisable.
Carry cash. Cards work in Maputo hotels and larger lodges, but beach villages and fuel stops often need meticais; see the money page for tipping norms.
Book dive boats and island trips ahead in the May–November high season, and build one spare day into any itinerary that depends on a domestic flight.
Questions people ask
What is a good 7-day itinerary for Mozambique?
Two nights in Maputo, then five in Tofo. Fly Maputo–Inhambane or take the daylight shuttle (about 7–8 hours, check). Use the week for whale sharks, mantas and beach time rather than moving a third time.
How many weeks should I spend in Mozambique?
One week covers Maputo and one beach. Ten days to two weeks adds Vilankulo and Bazaruto. Three weeks adds Gorongosa and, only if current advice allows, Ilha de Moçambique in the north.
What is the best route through Mozambique?
South to centre: Maputo → Tofo → Vilankulo and Bazaruto, flying the long legs and flying out of Vilankulo. The far north is excluded while Cabo Delgado, Niassa and Nampula advisories stand.
When should I go?
May to November: dry roads, clearer water for diving and the July–October whale season. December to April is hotter, wetter and cyclone season on the centre coast, which can cancel boat trips.
Do I need to fly between stops?
For Maputo–Inhambane and Vilankulo, flying saves a full day each way. Road transfers work in the south in daylight, but do not plan a single overland run down the whole coast.
Is the north of Mozambique safe to visit?
The site's country guidance says keep out of Cabo Delgado, Niassa and Nampula while advisories stand. Check your government's current advice before booking any northern leg, including Ilha de Moçambique.
