Where to stay, by area

Mozambique rewards one long stay over a tour of many towns. Roads are slow, internal flights are limited, and the best diving, snorkelling and beach time is at the place you sleep. Choose your coast first, then a lodge inside it.

Vilankulo is the gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago: dhow trips, kitesurfing and reef lodges on the mainland or on the islands themselves. Tofo, near Inhambane, is the dive and whale-shark base, with a mix of backpacker hostels and small beach lodges. Ponta do Ouro, close to the South African border, suits divers and self-drive visitors from KwaZulu-Natal. Maputo is a city stop, not a beach stop: two nights for architecture, seafood and music.

Inhambane town works for one night before the dhow ferry to Maxixe or the drive to Tofo. Gorongosa and Limpopo national parks have their own lodges inside or at the gate, and Ilha de Moçambique has guesthouses in the stone town — check current travel advice before booking the far north.

Types of accommodation and 2026 price bands

Four types cover most trips. Backpacker hostels and camps cluster in Tofo and Maputo. Mid-range beach lodges — thatched chalets, a pool, a dive centre — are the standard choice on the southern and central coast. Island and safari lodges at the top end include meals, transfers and diving or game drives. Self-catering houses suit families and self-drive visitors, especially around Ponta do Ouro.

Prices are 2026 estimates and swing hard with season. High season is roughly June to October, plus South African school holidays, when rates can double and the good places fill. Low season, roughly December to March, brings heat, rain and lower rates; some lodges close for maintenance. Check whether the rate includes meals, park fees and transfers — on the islands those add a lot.

When to book

For June to October and South African school holidays, book 2–3 months ahead, and earlier for island lodges and Gorongosa, which have few rooms. For April, May and November you can often book a few weeks out. December to March is quiet: many places have space, but some close, so confirm before you fly.

Book direct with small lodges where you can — they often hold the best room and can arrange airport or airstrip transfers. Ask about the transfer before you pay: a lodge on an island or a sand track may be two hours from the nearest town, and the drive is part of the cost.

Practical notes for your stay

Carry metical for small lodges, markets and tips; rand is widely accepted in the south, and larger lodges take cards. Power is 220 V with types C, F and M plugs, and outages are common outside the main cities — a power bank and a torch help. Buy a local SIM or eSIM on arrival for maps and lodge messages.

Malaria is a risk in much of the country, including the coast; sort prevention before you travel. Travel insurance should cover diving, evacuation and cancellation, since a cyclone or a medical transfer can change plans fast. Tipping is 10% in restaurants, and lodge staff boxes and dive crews usually get US$5–10 a day.

  • Confirm transfer time and cost before booking a remote lodge
  • Ask if meals, park fees and dives are included
  • Check cancellation terms for cyclone season (roughly Dec–Mar)
  • Keep a copy of your booking offline — coverage drops on the coast

Questions people ask

Where is the best area to stay in Mozambique?

For a first trip, Vilankulo for the Bazaruto Archipelago or Tofo for whale sharks and diving, 4–5 nights each. Add 2 nights in Maputo if you want city time. Pick one coast rather than combining several.

How much does a hotel cost in Mozambique?

2026 estimates: dorm beds US$15–30, budget rooms US$40–80, mid-range beach lodges US$80–200, and island or safari lodges US$250 and up. High season and South African school holidays push rates up sharply.

When should I book accommodation in Mozambique?

Book 2–3 months ahead for June–October and South African school holidays, and earlier for island lodges or Gorongosa. April, May and November are easier. December–March is quiet but some lodges close, so confirm first.

Is it better to stay on the Bazaruto islands or in Vilankulo?

Island lodges give you reefs at the door but cost much more and include fewer choices. Vilankulo is cheaper, has restaurants and dive operators, and day trips reach the archipelago. Stay on the mainland unless the island is the point of the trip.

Do I need cash at lodges in Mozambique?

Carry metical for small lodges, markets and tips. Rand is widely taken in the south. Larger lodges and city hotels take cards, but card machines and ATMs fail outside Maputo, so keep a cash buffer.

Is the far north safe for tourists?

Parts of Cabo Delgado, Niassa and Nampula are no-go districts. Check current government advice before booking anything north of the central coast, including Ilha de Moçambique, and follow it.
