Give Muzaffarabad half a day to one day: the Red Fort, the river confluence and one viewpoint; duration beyond that is check.

Muzaffarabad is the capital of Azad Kashmir, on the Jhelum and Neelum rivers at 737 m, founded in 1646 by Sultan Muzaffar Khan. It is reached by road from Islamabad in 4–5 hours via Murree and the Kohala checkpoint; the city airport is not operational. The 2005 earthquake was centred here and rebuilding has been slow. Sights are the two riverside forts, Jalalabad Garden and the Pir Chinasi road; how long you need beyond a half-day is check.

  • South Asia ↗Trekking regions, border districts and several Indian states need separate permits on top of the visa; check the permit before you book transport into them.
  • South Asia ↗Remove shoes (and in many Jain and Hindu temples, leather) before entering; cover shoulders and legs; ask before photographing people or rituals.
  • Pakistan ↗Check your own government travel advice for Pakistan before any booking; advice depends on your passport and changes without notice.

Safety

Government advice for this region is split, so treat safety as check: read your own government's current advisory, travel in daylight on the main roads, and confirm your insurer covers Azad Kashmir before you go.
  • The road from Murree to Kohala Bridge is narrow, winding and often under repair, with slow unpaved sections: drive it in daylight, especially the first time.
  • The city airport is not operational: plan on the road from Islamabad.
  • Opening hours and any seasonal access for the Red Fort and the Pir Chinasi road are check.
  • Government travel advice for this region is split: read your own government's current advisory and your insurer's position before booking.
