  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

The Near North is the lake-and-rock belt between Georgian Bay and the Quebec border: Sudbury and North Bay are the only real service towns, everything else is a small town with an outfitter. Public transport is thin, so pick a base and drive. Two nights gets you one provincial park; four nights lets you add Temagami or the French River without spending the trip in the car.

  • Winter driving here is the real risk: snow squalls can close Highway 17 or 11 with little notice.

Bags between cities

Luggage forwarding is not a service here; you carry your own bags. If you are moving between Sudbury and North Bay, pack for the car — the Ontario Northland bus allows one checked bag and one carry-on, with extra bags charged.

Lake moderates both ends; summer is a few degrees cooler than inland.

Best months are July to early September for paddling and swimming, and February to March for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. Bug season mid-June to late July is the trade-off for early-summer travel.
