Give New Bedford one full day and one night: the whaling museum and cobblestone historic district are the trip, and two nights only pays off if you add a harbor ferry.

New Bedford was the world's leading whaling port in the 19th century and the money it made is still standing: a compact national historical park of cobblestone streets, the Whaling Museum with a full-size ship, and a mile of Victorian mansions on County Street. It is a working fishing port, not a resort, and the downtown core is walkable in an afternoon. Most travellers see it as a day on a SouthCoast loop with Fall River and the ferry towns, or as one night before a Martha's Vineyard crossing.

About New Bedford

New Bedford sits on Massachusetts' southern coast, where a good harbor turned it into a fishing and whaling center. In the 19th century it was the world's premier whaling port, and whale oil production once earned it the labels "the richest city in the world" and "the city that lit the world." Around 101,000 people live there (2020), many of Portuguese, particularly Madeira, or Cape Verdean ancestry, with many recent arrivals from both places.

  • New Bedford Whaling Museum — It holds a full-scale whaling ship, artifacts and displays on whaling history and whale biology, and hosts an annual cover-to-cover reading of Moby Dick.
  • The Seaman's Bethel — This chapel appears in Melville's Moby Dick as the "Whaleman's Chapel"; the pew where Melville sat in 1840 is marked, and the walls list area fishermen who died.
  • The Rotch-Jones-Duff House & Garden Museum — Built in 1834 for whaling merchant William Rotch, Jr. and designed by Richard Upjohn, it is among the finest surviving Greek Revival homes.

Getting around

Downtown is walkable: the national park, Whaling Museum, Seamen's Bethel and the waterfront are within about 15 minutes on foot. SRTA buses cover the city and the terminal on Elm Street is the hub; Peter Pan runs to Providence. A car helps for the South End beaches, Fort Taber and day trips, and parking garages sit two blocks off Elm Street downtown.
