  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • New Zealand ↗Visa-waiver visitors need an NZeTA (with the tourism levy) before travel, including many transit passengers; others need a visa. Apply only through Immigration New Zealand or its official app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • New Zealand ↗Declare all food, plant and animal products, and used outdoor gear such as hiking boots and tents, on the New Zealand Traveller Declaration; undeclared risk items bring instant fines.
  • New Zealand ↗Drive on the left; give way as signed at one-lane bridges; an English-language licence or one with an approved translation or International Driving Permit is required.
  • New Zealand ↗Freedom camping is restricted: sleep in a vehicle only where signed as allowed, and in many places only in certified self-contained vehicles.

The North Island is where most New Zealanders live, so it is the easier island to travel without a car every day: Auckland, Wellington and Rotorua all have airports, and the driving distances between the main stops are shorter than on the South Island. A first trip works as three or four bases — Auckland for the north and the harbour, Rotorua or Taupō for the geothermal belt and the volcanoes, Wellington for the museum and the ferry south — with day-trips out of each. Trying to add Northland, Taranaki, Hawke's Bay and the East Coast to the same week means you see the island through a windscreen.

  • Auckland to Wellington is about 640 km (398 mi) and 8–9 h of driving — split it with a night in Rotorua or Taupō.
  • Volcanic and geothermal areas: stay on marked tracks and boardwalks; the ground and water can be scalding.

Bags between cities

No rail-based luggage forwarding like Japan; most travellers just carry bags between bases by car or bus.

Auckland and Northland
Warmest and wettest part of the island; rain arrives in short heavy showers year-round.
Central North Island
Inland and higher; frost and snow on the volcanoes in winter (Jul–Aug), which is also the ski season.
Wellington
Wind is the local weather; the ferry across Cook Strait can be cancelled in rough conditions.

December to March is the settled summer window and also the busiest; February and March keep the warmth with fewer bookings.
