The Northern River Valleys are a spread of hilly provinces — Lampang, Lamphun, Phrae, Nan, Phayao — each with its own old town, temples and river life. Distances are 1–2 hours by car; changing hotels every night wastes time. Sleep in Lampang for horse carriages and ceramics, or Nan for a slower pace and mountain views; day-trip the others.
