Northern Uganda is the country's emptiest quarter: Kidepo Valley savanna, Murchison Falls' northern bank, and Gulu as the only town with a traveller's infrastructure. Distances are long and roads rough, so it rewards people with time and a 4WD, not a first-week itinerary.

Rainy-season mud and flooded bridges can close northern roads for days; ask locally before leaving.
Bus travel here is slow and crowded — treat it as transport, not sightseeing.
Fuel stations thin out north of Gulu; fill up whenever you can.
