- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
- Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
- Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.
Northwestern Ontario is bigger than most countries and has almost no public transport between its towns. Kenora sits on Lake of the Woods near the Manitoba border; Thunder Bay is the regional hub with the airport and the hospital. Pick one as a base, rent a car, and accept long empty drives between stops. Without a car, you are limited to the towns Via Rail and Ontario Northland actually serve.

- Black flies and mosquitoes are heaviest from mid-June to late July, worst at dawn and dusk. Long sleeves, long pants tucked into socks, and DEET repellent.
- Cell service drops out on long stretches of Highways 11 and 17. Carry water, food and blankets for a breakdown.
- Winter driving is the real risk: snow, ice and closed highways. Build a spare day into any winter plan.
- Distances are deceptive. Thunder Bay to Kenora is roughly 490 km (304 mi) of two-lane highway with few services.Distances are deceptive. Thunder Bay to Kenora is roughly 304 mi (490 km) of two-lane highway with few services.

- Kenora and Rainy River District
- Central time. Lake of the Woods moderates early autumn; July and August are the reliable warm months.
- Thunder Bay and the north shore
- Lake Superior keeps spring cool and delays summer; fog and cold wind off the water are normal in June.
Summer is short and the bug season overlaps the start of it. Late August and September give warm days, fewer insects and the start of fall colour.
