Palatka

Give Palatka one night, or a half-day stop on the Amtrak Silver line: the riverfront, Ravine Gardens and the historic districts fit in 3–4 hours.

Palatka is a small St. Johns River town in North Central Florida, about 69 mi (111 km) south of Jacksonville. It is one of Florida's older cities, with two historic districts, a WPA-era ravine garden and a riverfront festival calendar. Most travellers pass through on Amtrak or US-17; the town works best as a single night or a half-day break on the drive between Jacksonville and Orlando.

About Palatka

Palatka is a town of about 20,000 people (2020) on the St. Johns River in North Central Florida, roughly 69 miles south of Jacksonville. It is one of the state's earliest cities to develop, and it holds two historic districts plus state landmarks such as Ravine Gardens State Park. The surrounding area supports outdoor pursuits including skydiving, kayaking, boating and golf. The town's calendar is busy with festivals, and the azalea draws particular attention in early March, when blooms appear across the city alongside riverfront festivities. A car is needed to reach the region's full range of services and recreation.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is effectively required: sights are spread along US-17 and FL-19 and there is no useful local transit for visitors. Ride Solutions runs the regional bus. Amtrak's Palatka station and Greyhound share 220 N 11th St, a short walk from downtown.
