How to choose, step by step

Start with Panama City. It is the base every route passes through, and the Canal, Casco Viejo and Panamá Viejo fill three days without rushing. Miraflores Locks is best mid-morning, when ships are moving; Casco Viejo is best at sunset. The Biomuseo sits on the Amador Causeway, an easy half-day with the city skyline behind you.

Then pick exactly one region. Caribbean islands (Bocas del Toro) suit swimmers, snorkellers and anyone who wants water taxis between beaches. San Blas (Guna Yala) is the other island option: simpler stays, run by the Guna, reached by 4x4 and boat rather than a scheduled flight. Boquete suits hikers and coffee drinkers, with Volcán Barú above the town. Coiba and Santa Catalina are for divers and surfers on the Pacific side.

Add a short stop only if your dates allow. Gamboa puts you in rainforest beside the Canal, one to two nights, with Pipeline Road for birders at dawn. Portobelo is a one-night fort-and-village stop on the Caribbean coast; go with a driver, since Colón city has high crime. El Valle de Antón works as a weekend escape from the city.

Match the plan to your length. Seven days: Panama City 3 plus Bocas 4, or swap Bocas for San Blas 2 plus Gamboa 2. Ten days: Panama City 3, San Blas 2, Boquete 3, Panama City 2. Fourteen days: Panama City 3, San Blas 2, Boquete 3, Bocas 4, Panama City 2. Boquete to Bocas by shuttle and boat takes 4–5 hours.

Book the internal flights early. Bocas and David are served from Albrook (PAC), the city's domestic airport, not Tocumen. San Blas has no scheduled flight; tours run by 4x4 and boat. Never plan the Darién: it is not a tourist route.

  • 3 nights Panama City is the fixed point of every route
  • One region for a 7-day trip, two for 10–14 days
  • Fly from Albrook (PAC) for Bocas and David
  • San Blas by 4x4 and boat, booked as a tour
  • Gamboa and Portobelo are short add-ons, not bases

Notes

Distances look small on the map and take longer than you expect. Roads to the interior are slow, and the Boquete–Bocas crossing mixes shuttle and boat. Internal flights save a day each way but add airport time at Albrook.

The dry season, roughly January to April, is the easiest window for the Canal, Boquete and San Blas. Bocas has a second quieter window in September–October and again in February–March. Treat all month guidance as a planning default and check forecasts before you commit to island nights.

San Blas is Guna land with its own entry rules and fees, and island stays are basic. Portobelo and Colón province need more care than the rest of the country. Carry travel insurance that covers domestic flights, boat transfers and any diving you plan on Coiba.

FAQ

Questions people ask

What are the best places to visit in Panama?

Panama City for the Canal and Casco Viejo, then one region: Bocas del Toro for Caribbean islands, Boquete for coffee and hiking, or San Blas (Guna Yala) for Guna-run island stays. Gamboa, Portobelo and El Valle de Antón work as short add-ons.

How many days do you need in Panama?

Seven days covers Panama City plus one region. Ten days adds a second region, such as San Blas and Boquete. Fourteen days lets you do the city, San Blas, Boquete and Bocas without rushing, with a night back in the city before flying home.

Which areas of Panama suit a first visit?

Panama City, then Bocas del Toro, Boquete or San Blas. These have the easiest transport, the most places to stay and the clearest dry-season windows. Skip the Darién entirely and treat Colón province as a day trip with a driver.

Do I need a car to see these places?

No. Internal flights from Albrook (PAC) reach Bocas and David, buses and shuttles cover Boquete, and San Blas is sold as a 4x4-and-boat tour. A car helps only for El Valle de Antón and slower interior stops.

When is the best time to visit Panama?

January to April is the dry season and the simplest window for the Canal, Boquete and San Blas. Bocas also has good spells in September–October and February–March. Check forecasts before booking island nights (check).

Is Panama safe for tourists?

The main tourist routes are generally fine, but Colón city has high crime and the Darién is off-limits. Use a driver for Portobelo, keep valuables out of sight in Panama City, and check current advice before you travel.
