Give Poltava one full day for the battle field and the round Korpusny garden, then move on: it is a stop on the Kyiv–Kharkiv line, not a base.

Poltava is a mid-size city in Central Ukraine and the administrative centre of Poltava region, on the rail and road corridor between Kyiv and Kharkiv. Its name is tied to the 1709 battle in which Peter the Great defeated Charles XII of Sweden. Airspace over Ukraine is closed to civil aviation, so you arrive by train or bus. Check current travel advice before booking.

  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Reach this subregion only from the EU side — Romania for Moldova — through crossings run by recognised authorities; no route through Ukraine, Belarus or Russia is planned here.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Re-read your government's advice for Moldova (it covers Transnistria) in the week you travel; the situation next door changes fast.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Carry euros in cash for Transnistria and village Moldova; cards stop working at the Dniester.
  • Ukraine ↗Check your own government travel advice for Ukraine before any booking; advice depends on your passport and changes without notice.
  • Ukraine ↗Airspace is closed; entry is by rail or road from Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania or Moldova, with long queues at busy crossings.
  • Ukraine ↗Confirm that your travel insurance and medical evacuation cover apply to Ukraine before you rely on it.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: about 30 min corner to corner. Trolleybuses, buses and marshrutkas run roughly 06:00–22:00 on main routes; pay a flat fare per ride. Bolt and Uklon are the easy taxi options, and after 22:00 they are the only sensible one.

Watch out

Safety

The centre is calm by day and the main risk is pickpocketing in crowds and unlit side streets at night. Check your government's Ukraine travel advice first: this desk does not plan around the security situation.
  • Airspace is closed: no flights into Ukraine. Reach Poltava by train or bus.
  • Trains may stop at Kyiv Station, Pivdenna, or both: check your ticket before you travel.
  • Between 22:00 and 06:00 city transport stops; use a taxi.
  • Do not walk to distant suburbs at night or if you do not know the way.
  • Read your own government's travel advice for Ukraine before booking anything.
