Port Hardy
Stay 1 night as a ferry or trail staging point, not as a sightseeing base: the town itself fills half a day.
Port Hardy is a working transport hub at the north end of Vancouver Island, not a resort. People come for three reasons: the BC Ferries Inside Passage run to Prince Rupert or Bella Coola, the North Coast Trail and Cape Scott trailheads, and cold-water diving offshore. If none of those apply, one night is enough to see the museum, the seawall and Fort Rupert.

About Port Hardy
Port Hardy is a district municipality of about 3,900 people (2021) on North Vancouver Island in British Columbia. It sits at the northern end of the Island Highway, roughly 385 km from Nanaimo and 500 km from Victoria, and works as a hub for air, ferry and marine networks. The town is the northern terminus for BC Ferries' Discovery Coast run and the Prince Rupert route, and it is the starting point for the Cape Scott and North Coast Trails. It also opens access to the Central Coast.
Beaver Cove, beside the ferry terminal, is the oldest known site of human habitation on Vancouver Island, dated to around 5850 BCE. The Kwakiutl First Nations live next to the former Fort Rupert site, and carvers can be seen working there. Offshore diving draws experienced divers to cold water.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
- Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
- Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Safety
- Bear country: store food properly at campgrounds and on trails, and never leave coolers out.
- Cell and data coverage thins fast north and west of town.
- Ferry and bus schedules are seasonal and sparse: book the ferry and confirm the bus the same week.
- Cold water and strong currents offshore: diving here needs prior cold-water experience.
- Distances are long: Campbell River is about 2.5–3 hours by road, Victoria about 5.5 hours.
