Before you start
Welcome to the Old Riga (Vecrīga) audio walk in Riga. 3 stops: Riga Cathedral (Dom), Town Hall Square and the House of the Blackheads and St Peter’s Church. Early-morning and evening cluster: the Cathedral, Town Hall Square and the Blackheads house; go before 10:00 or after 17:00, and keep away from touts.
The medieval Old Town between the Daugava river and the boulevard ring, from the Cathedral to St Peter's (approximate box). Underfoot: cobbles; slope: flat; shade: medium.
Riga is a Baltic port with a German medieval core, a Russian-imperial boom of iron and Art Nouveau, and a 20th century of occupations and a regained republic. All three layers sit within a 3 km walk, and the city makes sense once you can read them apart: the spires and guild houses of the Old Town, the carved facades of the Art Nouveau quarter, the Freedom Monument and the market halls built from Zeppelin hangars.
Before you start: Bars: check prices before you order. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.
