Before you start
Welcome to the Old Market and cathedral audio walk in Roseau. 3 stops: Dominica Museum, Roseau Cathedral and Old Market Plaza. The old market square, the museum and the cathedral: the core of the town, best before the midday heat.
Old Market Plaza, the Dominica Museum and the cathedral, with the streets between. Underfoot: paved, uneven; slope: flat; shade: medium.
Roseau is a Caribbean capital of about a dozen streets, set on a rare strip of flat land between the sea and a wall of volcanic hills. The town holds a Kalinago name, a French street grid, a British fort site and an independent country's parliament within a short walk, and it is the base for almost everything else on the island.
Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.

The Kalinago, who lived on the island when Europeans arrived, called it Wai'tukubuli, often translated as 'tall is her body', and the phrase fits: Dominica is a set of volcanic ridges and forested valleys with very little flat ground. Columbus sighted it on a Sunday in November 1493 and named it for the day, Dominica. France and Britain fought over Dominica for most of the 1700s.
Earlier in the day is quieter. Ask at the desk; flash is usually not allowed.

Roseau starts with a name and a mountain. The town itself grew on a rare piece of level land at the mouth of the Roseau River, where reeds grew in the delta. The French called the place Roseau, reeds, and the name stayed when the island changed hands.
Cover shoulders and knees; no photography during services. Allowed outside Mass; no flash. It is a working church: cover shoulders and knees. Sunday mornings are for worship; visit at another time.

What is Old Market Plaza? A small cobbled square in the old town, next to the Dominica Museum.
Ask before photographing vendors. Quiet before 10:00; busier when a cruise ship is in port. Allowed; ask vendors. The plaza was once a place of trade and, in the colonial period, of the slave trade. Craft stalls sell baskets by the Kalinago community; ask what is handmade. Cafés have shade and a cold drink.
