Sabaragamuwa sits between Colombo and the hill country, so it works as a 2-night stop on the road to Kandy or Ella rather than a destination on its own. Ratnapura is the gem town and the gateway to Adam's Peak; Kitulgala is the white-water and rainforest stop. Trains barely reach the province — plan on bus or a hired car.

Night sequences

2 nights: Ratnapura 2: gem market and mine visit, one day for Adam's Peak if in season
3 nights: Kitulgala 1 (rafting) + Ratnapura 2, then on to Kandy or Ella

Adam's Peak is a steep, cold, 4–6 hour round trip on steps; start before midnight and carry a layer.
Gem 'mine tours' and shop sales are commission-driven — agree the price and the tour length before you go.
The Ratnapura area is one of the wettest in Sri Lanka; expect rain in most months.

Ratnapura and the lowlands: Rain year-round; the southwest monsoon (May–Sep) is heaviest. Mornings are usually clearer than afternoons.
Kitulgala and the hill fringe: Rafting runs depend on water level; the season is usually December to May.
Sri Pada summit: Pilgrimage season roughly December to May; summit nights are near freezing.

The province is wet most of the year, so treat any dry window as a bonus rather than a plan.
