Saint-Basile-le-Grand is a residential and commercial town of about 16,700 people on the Mont-Saint-Hilaire commuter line, 25 km east of Montréal. Its draw is small: a stretch of old houses on rue Principale, a riverside launch ramp and 20 km of bike paths. Most travellers pass through on the way to Mont-Saint-Bruno or the Richelieu valley towns, and one night is enough if you stop at all.

About Saint-Basile-le-Grand
Saint-Basile-le-Grand is a residential and commercial municipality in La Vallée-du-Richelieu, part of the Montérégie region of Quebec. It lies 25 km from Montréal and 231 km from Quebec City, with the village centre sitting 3.5 km northwest of the Richelieu River. The town is known for Vieux-Saint-Basile-le-Grand, where rustic and often upscale houses line rue Principale between Montée Robert and boulevard du Millénaire. Outdoor recreation here means hiking, biking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, and the local cycling network covers almost 20 km, with 10.2 km inside the town and links to the Montréal metropolitan network.
Route 116 and the railway both cut through the village, and Route 223 follows the Richelieu River's west bank as a panoramic drive past rural land, mixed old and new buildings, and the river's nautical setting. The commuter train station on rue de la Gare connects the town to Montréal.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
- Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
- Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.
