Saint-Charles-sur-Richelieu
Go for a half-day on the Richelieu: the cable ferry, the riverfront chemin des Patriotes and the church. Sleep elsewhere unless you have a car.
Saint-Charles-sur-Richelieu is a small riverside village of about 1,600 people on the east bank of the Richelieu, 51 km from Montreal. It is a cycling, boating and farm-stand stop rather than a destination: the cable ferry to Saint-Marc-sur-Richelieu, the heritage chemin des Patriotes and the church are the reasons to come. Most travellers see it in two to four hours, or use it as a lunch stop on the Route du Richelieu.

About Saint-Charles-sur-Richelieu
Saint-Charles-sur-Richelieu is a municipality on the St. Lawrence plain in the Montérégie region of Quebec, part of La Vallée-du-Richelieu Regional County Municipality. It sits on the east bank of the Richelieu River, facing Saint-Marc-sur-Richelieu on the opposite shore, and is 51 km from Montreal by road. The village combines riverside and rural landscapes, with most of its territory given over to agriculture outside the riverside strip and a few rang roads.
It is known as a recreational, nautical and agricultural stop: municipal parks, marinas and wharves serve travellers and boaters, and a river segment of 11.8 km is used for pleasure boating. Built heritage with a rustic, renovated character includes resort buildings along the river and country houses. Cycle tourism circuits, art and local flavours round out the draw.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
- Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
- Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.
