About Saint-Hilarion
Saint-Hilarion is a municipality in the Charlevoix regional county municipality, part of Quebec's Capitale-Nationale region, on the north shore of the Saint-Laurent River. It lies inland, about 8.8 km from the river, and sits roughly midway between Baie-Saint-Paul (21 km) and La Malbaie (28 km), a position it claims as the heart of Charlevoix. Forestry, agriculture and services underpin the local economy, alongside lodging, restaurants and outdoor recreation. The village centre stands at an altitude of 398 m, and the municipality includes the hamlets of Saint-Hilarion-Nord and Saint-Hilarion-du-Lac plus several lakes.
The whole municipal territory lies within the Charlevoix astrobleme, a crater about 54 km across formed when a meteorite struck nearly 400 million years ago. The church, built of field stone, stands on a hill above the village and the surrounding plateau.
