Sainte-Anne-de-Sorel

Go for one day on the Chenal du Moine: marsh boardwalk, lighthouse, sausage lunch. Sleep in Sorel-Tracy unless you have a boat or a car.
Sainte-Anne-de-Sorel is a riverside village on the south shore of Lac Saint-Pierre, 85 km east of Montréal, in the Pierre-De Saurel area. It is the gateway to the Lac-Saint-Pierre World Biosphere Reserve and the Îles-de-Sorel archipelago. There is no real town centre to wander: the sights sit along chemin du Chenal-du-Moine and the riverfront, so a car or a bike matters more than a hotel choice. One full day covers the marsh, the lighthouse and a meal; a second day is for paddling or birding.

About Sainte-Anne-de-Sorel
Sainte-Anne-de-Sorel is a recreation-focused municipality on the southern edge of Lac Saint-Pierre, part of the Pierre-De Saurel regional county in Montérégie, Quebec. It serves as the entry point to the Lac-Saint-Pierre Biosphere Reserve. The municipality takes in eight islands within the 103 Islands of Sorel, including du Moine, des Barques and Létourneau. Its mainland is farmed apart from the residential strip along the water, and the shoreline runs 11.9 kilometres. The Chenal du Moine marks the inland boundary. Boaters find channels, islands and open lake water, and migratory birds pass through in spring and autumn.
The village lies 85 km from Montréal, reached by route 132 and chemin du Chenal-du-Moine. The river measures 6.8 km across from the wharf to the opposite shore, and 2.7 km to Saint-Ignace Island. Services for visitors and boaters, municipal parks and a mix of maritime and agricultural buildings round out the place.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
- Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
- Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around
A car is the practical choice: sights are spread over about 8 km of chemin du Chenal-du-Moine plus the riverfront. Cycling works in summer on the flat riverside roads. Local bus service is limited; check the MRC Pierre-De Saurel and Sorel-Tracy transit pages before relying on it. Boats and kayaks cover the channels and islands.
