Before you start
Welcome to the Ferhadija, Latin Bridge and the cathedral audio walk in Sarajevo. 3 stops: Latin Bridge, Sacred Heart Cathedral and Gallery 11/07/95 (Srebrenica memorial). Late-morning cluster: the pedestrian street, the bridge where the 1914 assassination took place, and the cathedral; flat and easy on foot.
From the Latin Bridge west along the river and Ferhadija to the cathedral and the Eternal Flame. Underfoot: paved pedestrian street; slope: flat; shade: medium.
Sarajevo is a small capital in a steep valley, and its history is written in layers you can cross on foot in an hour: an Ottoman bazaar, an Austro-Hungarian avenue, socialist towers, and the marks of a siege that ended in 1996.
Before you start: Church and cathedral: cover shoulders and knees; no photos during services. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.
1. Latin Bridge
Latinska ćuprija
Look for
- Bridge crossing
- Assassination corner and plaque
- Museum Sarajevo 1878–1918
- Bridge from the Obala quay, looking west
Stop 1 of 3: Latin Bridge. Locally, Latinska ćuprija. Arrival point: Miljacka river, west end of the bazaar.
The stone bridge near where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was shot in 1914: ten minutes and a photo, best in the morning before the tours. On a first visit: The best short stop for the history.
Look for Bridge crossing: Ten strides of stone with the river below. Look for Assassination corner and plaque: Read the plaque on the corner building. Look for Museum Sarajevo 1878–1918: Photographs and a short exhibition (check hours). For a photo: Bridge from the Obala quay, looking west, golden hour.
On 28 June 1914 a young Bosnian Serb, Gavrilo Princip, shot Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife near the Latin Bridge, and within weeks Europe was at war. The stone bridges over the Miljacka, including the Latin Bridge, are part of the same system.

Look for Nave and twin towers: Tall ribbed vaults and a rose window. Look for Stained glass and side chapels: Quiet corners on the side aisles. Look for Statue of Pope John Paul II on the square: Outside, on the square.
The Sacred Heart Cathedral, completed in the 1880s, serves the Catholic community, and the Old Orthodox Church near the bazaar is one of the oldest Serbian Orthodox churches in the city, with a small museum of icons. The Sacred Heart Cathedral is neo-Gothic, copying the twin-tower plan of northern European churches.

Content is heavy; allow time to sit afterwards. Tickets are cash, about KM 10 (2026 estimate, check). Do not take photographs of visitors or of people crying. Do not argue about the events; listen more than you comment. Go when you have an hour of quiet; do not fit it between shopping stops.
