How to build the trip, step by step

Step 1: fix the season. November to May is the dry window. Within it, November to March is best for Djoudj and the Saloum wetlands, November to February for Kédougou, and November to May for the coast and Casamance. See best time to visit Senegal before booking flights.

Step 2: start in Dakar. Three nights covers the Plateau, the Museum of Black Civilisations, IFAN and the Almadies coast, with one morning reserved for Gorée. Take the first ferry; the island empties again after 16:00.

Step 3: pick one direction out of Dakar, not two. North to Saint-Louis (2–3 nights, with Djoudj as a half day November to March), or south into the Sine-Saloum delta (2–3 nights by pirogue from Toubacouta or Djifer). Doing both in a week means a long day on the road via Thiès.

Step 4: add a beach if you have spare days. Petite Côte — Saly or Popenguine — sits between Dakar and the Saloum and works as a 2-night stop on the way back. Lompoul's dunes are a 1-night detour on the northern route.

Step 5: treat Casamance and the south-east as a second trip or a 14-day extension. Ziguinchor and Oussouye for 2 nights plus Cap Skirring for 3 is the classic Casamance loop; Kédougou and Bassari country need 3 nights and suit November to February. Reach Casamance by overnight ferry or about a 1-hour flight (check schedules and current advice).

Step 6: move by day. Cars with drivers and sept-places cover the main routes; plan each leg in daylight and keep a buffer day before your flight home.

  • 7 days: Dakar → Saint-Louis → Sine-Saloum → Dakar
  • 10 days: Dakar → Lompoul → Saint-Louis → Sine-Saloum → Petite Côte
  • 14 days: Dakar → Saint-Louis → Sine-Saloum → Casamance (Ziguinchor, Oussouye, Cap Skirring)

Notes before you commit

Gorée is a half-day, not a base. The House of Slaves and the island's memorial sites are the reason to go; most visitors return to Dakar the same day.

Saint-Louis and the Sine-Saloum are different trips. Saint-Louis is a walkable island town with a fishing quarter and a jazz festival; the Saloum is lodges, mangroves and boats. Pick the one that matches how you want to spend the days.

Touba is a working holy city, not a sight. Dress fully covered, expect crowds around the Grand Magal, and check whether non-Muslim visitors may enter the mosque area before you travel (check).

The south-east is the least developed for tourism. Roads to Kédougou are long, and Bassari country is best with a local guide; go November to February.

Casamance has its own travel advice. Check your government's current guidance before booking the ferry or a flight, and keep the return leg flexible.

Costs vary widely by region and season. See Senegal travel costs and daily budget for planning figures, and Senegal visa and entry requirements before you fly.

Which areas of Senegal suit a first visit?

Dakar and Gorée, then one of Saint-Louis or the Sine-Saloum delta. Both are reachable from Dakar in a day by car. Casamance and Kédougou are better saved for a second, longer trip.
