Sierra Leone

Portuguese sailors in the 1460s named the peninsula Serra Leoa, the Lion Mountains, perhaps for the thunder that rolls around its peaks. The estuary behind it is one of the largest natural harbours in Africa, and it drew ships for fresh water and trade.

By the 17th and 18th centuries the trade was in people. On Bunce Island, up the Sierra Leone River, a British company ran a fort that shipped tens of thousands of captives, many sold to the rice plantations of South Carolina and Georgia, where planters valued West African rice-growing skills. The Gullah people of the American coast trace strong links to this region.

Inland, Mande-speaking Mende in the south and east, Temne in the north and many smaller peoples such as the Limba, Kono, Kissi and Sherbro lived in chiefdoms. Wars between them fed captives to the coast, while Fula and Mandinka traders spread Islam from the north.

Society was, and in many ways still is, organised through initiation societies: Poro for men and Bondo or Sande for women. They teach, regulate and hold power alongside chiefs, and their masked figures, including the black helmet masks of Sande, are among West Africa's best-known carvings.

In 1787 British abolitionists sent about 400 Black Londoners, many of them former soldiers who had fought for Britain in the American Revolution, to found a 'Province of Freedom' on the peninsula. Disease and conflict nearly destroyed it.

In 1792 around 1,200 Black Loyalists from Nova Scotia arrived and founded Freetown proper, gathering, as tradition has it, under a great cotton tree. They were joined in 1800 by Maroons deported from Jamaica. Britain made the settlement a crown colony in 1808.

After Britain banned the slave trade, the Royal Navy's West Africa Squadron based itself in Freetown and landed tens of thousands of 'recaptives' freed from slave ships. Settlers and recaptives mixed to form the Krio people, with their own English-based language, church-going culture, clapboard houses and a strong tradition of education.

Fourah Bay College, founded in 1827, was the first Western-style university in West Africa and trained clergy, teachers and professionals from across the region, earning Freetown the name 'Athens of West Africa'. The Cotton Tree, Freetown's symbol for two centuries, fell in a storm in May 2023.

Britain declared a protectorate over the hinterland in 1896 and imposed a 'hut tax'. In 1898 the Temne leader Bai Bureh and Mende chiefs rose in the Hut Tax War; Bai Bureh was captured and exiled but is remembered as a national hero, and one of the peninsula's beaches bears his name.

The colony (Krio Freetown) and the protectorate (the rest) were ruled differently, and tension between Krio elites and hinterland leaders shaped politics. Diamonds were found in Kono in the 1930s, creating mining boom towns and smuggling networks.

Sierra Leone became independent on 27 April 1961 under Milton Margai of the SLPP. After disputed elections and coups in 1967–68, Siaka Stevens of the APC took power and in 1978 made the country a one-party state. His rule was marked by patronage and the plundering of diamond revenue, leaving the state hollow by the late 1980s.

In March 1991 the Revolutionary United Front (RUF), led by Foday Sankoh and backed by Charles Taylor's forces in Liberia, crossed into the east. The war spread through a weak army, coups (1992, 1997) and the arming of civilian militias such as the Kamajors.

The RUF and allied forces became notorious for mass amputations, the forced recruitment of child soldiers and sexual violence. Control of diamond fields financed the fighting, and 'blood diamonds' became a global issue that led to the Kimberley Process certification scheme.

In January 1999 rebels overran much of Freetown. A peace accord that year failed; in 2000 British troops intervened, and a large UN force (UNAMSIL) disarmed fighters. The war was declared over in January 2002 after about 50,000 deaths and the displacement of half the population.

A UN-backed Special Court convicted leaders on all sides, and Charles Taylor was sentenced to 50 years in 2012, the first former head of state convicted by an international court since Nuremberg. A Truth and Reconciliation Commission recorded testimony, and many communities practised local reconciliation ceremonies.

The 2014–16 Ebola epidemic in West Africa infected about 14,000 people in Sierra Leone and killed nearly 4,000, including many health workers. Quarantines, school closures and fear halted the economy; burial practices had to change. The response left the country with better disease surveillance and a network of community health workers.

In August 2017 a mudslide at Regent, above Freetown, killed over 1,000 people after torrential rain, a reminder of the dangers of rapid, unplanned hillside building in one of the world's wettest capitals.

Politically, power has alternated peacefully between the SLPP and APC since 2002. Julius Maada Bio, a former junta member elected in 2018, won a disputed second term in 2023; a November 2023 attack on military barracks and prisons was labelled a failed coup. Free schooling and a 2024 law banning child marriage are among his government's flagship reforms.

The newest crisis is 'kush', a cheap synthetic drug mix that has devastated young people in Freetown and led the president to declare a national emergency in April 2024.

The Freetown Peninsula is a ridge of forested mountains dropping to white-sand beaches, among the finest on the West African coast. Inland, mangrove creeks give way to rolling farmland, rainforest in the east (Gola, Tiwai) and savanna and the Loma Mountains in the north.

Wildlife survived the war in pockets. Tiwai Island, a community-run sanctuary on the Moa River, has one of the highest densities of primates in the world, and the Tacugama sanctuary cares for chimpanzees, the national animal, taken as pets or bushmeat.

Rice is the staple: a meal without rice does not count. It comes with 'plasas', stews of cassava, potato or jute leaves cooked in palm oil with fish, or with groundnut soup. Krio families add dishes such as akara, ginger beer and the Sunday 'jollof' of Freetown.

Krio culture is visible in the old wooden board houses, church choirs and the ashobi (matching cloth) of weddings. Music runs from palm-wine guitar and gumbay drums to Afropop artists who sing in Krio, and the Freetown lantern parade survives around Independence Day.
