Trains and buses run between them on one fare system, so you can sleep in one place and still see the rest. Two bases is the maximum that stays comfortable.

Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rips are the real danger, not the waves.
Do not drink and swim — beach towns here party hard and the water is close.
Read stinger signs in the warmer months; some beaches have netted enclosures, and some species are dangerous.
Shark attacks are rare but possible; patrolled beaches only.
Crocodiles are not a threat in this region, unlike further north in Queensland.

Coast (Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast): Subtropical: warm and humid summers with afternoon storms, mild dry winters. Sea temperatures stay swimmable most of the year.
Hinterland and ranges: Cooler and wetter than the coast; rainforest walks can be muddy after rain.

Best months are roughly April–May and September–October: warm days, less rain and fewer school-holiday crowds. December–February is hot, humid and stormy; Australian school holidays fill the coast.
