- Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
- Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
- Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
- New Zealand ↗Visa-waiver visitors need an NZeTA (with the tourism levy) before travel, including many transit passengers; others need a visa. Apply only through Immigration New Zealand or its official app, and check the rules for your passport.
- New Zealand ↗Declare all food, plant and animal products, and used outdoor gear such as hiking boots and tents, on the New Zealand Traveller Declaration; undeclared risk items bring instant fines.
- New Zealand ↗Drive on the left; give way as signed at one-lane bridges; an English-language licence or one with an approved translation or International Driving Permit is required.
- New Zealand ↗Freedom camping is restricted: sleep in a vehicle only where signed as allowed, and in many places only in certified self-contained vehicles.
The South Island is bigger than it looks on the map: Christchurch to Queenstown is a full driving day, and the West Coast road is slow. Choose a loop — Christchurch, then either the west coast glaciers or the Mackenzie Country, then Queenstown and Fiordland — and give each stop two nights. The island rewards depth over coverage.

- Christchurch to Queenstown via the West Coast is two long driving days; do not attempt it in one.
- Milford Road can close after heavy rain or snow; have a Plan B day in Te Anau.
- Fuel is sparse on the West Coast and in the Mackenzie Country — fill up when you can.
Day-trips door to door
| To | From | Door-to-door p50 | Last return | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Milford Sound | Te Anau | 240 min | unknown | The drive is about 2 h each way from Te Anau; from Queenstown it is a very long day. Book the cruise ahead in summer. |
| Aoraki/Mount Cook and Tekapo | Christchurch | 300 min | unknown | Better as an overnight than a day trip; the Mackenzie Country deserves a night for the dark skies. |
| Abel Tasman National Park | Nelson | 60 min | unknown | Water taxi or kayak from Marahau; check the last water taxi back. |
| Otago Peninsula | Dunedin | 30 min | unknown | Wildlife tours run to dusk; drive yourself only if you are confident on narrow gravel roads. |
Bags between cities
Luggage forwarding between main centres is usually next-day; the receiving accommodation must accept it. On the West Coast and in Fiordland, allow an extra day.

- West Coast
- One of the wettest places in New Zealand — over 2000 mm a year. Rain is normal; plan around it, not against it.
- Canterbury and Mackenzie Country
- Dry east of the Alps; hot northwesterly winds can push summer temperatures into the 30s. Winter snow closes alpine roads at times.
- Otago and Southland
- Cooler the further south you go; alpine areas are cold in winter and snow-capped much of the year.
Best months for a road trip are November to April. Summer (Dec–Feb) is the busiest and books out early; shoulder months are quieter and cheaper.
