How to choose, step by step

Step 1: count your nights. With 5–7 nights, stay in Seoul and take one day trip (Suwon or the DMZ). With 10 nights, run Seoul → Jeonju → Gyeongju → Busan, or Seoul → Gyeongju → Busan → Jeju if you fly.

Step 2: pick a second city that matches your interest. Busan for coast and markets, Gyeongju for Silla and Buddhist heritage, Jeonju for hanok streets and food. All three sit on or near the Seoul–Busan corridor.

Step 3: decide whether Jeju earns its flights. It needs a car and 3–4 nights to be worth the airfare; on a 7-night trip it usually costs you Seoul or Busan time.

Step 4: add mountains only in the right season. Seoraksan with Sokcho works in May–June and October; winter access and trails vary, so check before booking.

Step 5: book the long legs early. KTX seats on Seoul–Busan and holiday weekends sell out; Jeju flights from Gimpo are frequent but peak in July–August and around Chuseok.

Notes and things that change the plan

Weather sets the calendar more than anything else. April–June and September–November are the comfortable windows; July–August brings heat, humidity and rain, and January is cold enough to push you indoors.

Holidays matter. Chuseok and Seollal move millions of people onto trains and roads; book KTX and domestic flights weeks ahead or travel outside those dates.

Base yourself once per region rather than hopping every night. Seoul's subway covers the palaces, markets and museums, and Suwon and the DMZ are day trips from it.

Jeju without a car is slow. Buses exist but reach fewer coastal stops; if you will not drive, shorten Jeju or skip it.

Check opening days for palaces, temples and the DMZ tour before you lock dates; some sites close one day a week or run timed entry (check).

  • 5–7 nights: Seoul plus Suwon or the DMZ
  • 10 nights: Seoul, Jeonju, Gyeongju, Busan
  • 14 nights: add Jeju by air, car on the island
  • Avoid Chuseok and Seollal for intercity travel if you can

Questions people ask

What are the best places to visit in South Korea?

Seoul first (4–6 nights), then Busan (3 nights) by KTX. Add Gyeongju, Jeonju, Suwon or the DMZ if you have time, and Jeju or Seoraksan and Sokcho only on a 10-day-plus trip.

How many days do you need in South Korea?

Five to seven nights covers Seoul with one day trip. Ten nights adds Busan plus Gyeongju or Jeonju. Two weeks lets you include Jeju, which needs 3–4 nights and a car.

Which areas of South Korea suit a first visit?

The Seoul Capital Area for palaces, markets and day trips, and the Busan–Gyeongju corridor for coast and Silla history. Both sit on the main KTX line, so you avoid extra flights.

Is Jeju worth it on a short trip?

Only with 3–4 nights and a car. On a 7-night trip the flights and slower buses usually cost you Seoul or Busan time, so save Jeju for a longer visit.

When is the best time to visit South Korea?

April–June and September–November for mild, dry weather. July–August is hot and wet, January is cold. Avoid Chuseok and Seollal for intercity trains unless you book early.

How do you travel between these places?

KTX links Seoul, Daejeon, Daegu and Busan, with Gyeongju nearby. Jeonju is about 1 h 40 from Seoul by KTX. Fly Gimpo or Busan to Jeju; ferries also run to Jeju and Japan.
