South Korea
South Korea itineraries: 1 week, 2 weeks and 3 weeks
For 7 days, do 4 nights in Seoul then 3 in Busan by KTX — that is the best-value first route. Add Gyeongju or Jeonju at 10 days, Jeju at 14. With only 5 days, stay in Seoul and day-trip to Suwon or the DMZ.

Summary table by length, month and cost
Pick the length first, then the season, then the budget. The table below is the short version of everything on this page; the sections after it explain each route stop by stop.
Costs are 2026 estimates for one person travelling mid-range: a private room or good hostel, KTX and intercity buses, one paid attraction most days and two restaurant meals a day. Flights to and from South Korea are not included.
| Length | Route | Nights per stop | Best months | Daily cost (2026 estimate) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 days | Seoul only, day trip to Suwon or the DMZ | Seoul 5 | Apr–Jun, Sep–Nov | ₩120,000–200,000 |
| 7 days | Seoul → KTX → Busan | Seoul 4, Busan 3 | Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct | ₩130,000–220,000 |
| 10 days | Seoul → Jeonju → Gyeongju → Busan | Seoul 4, Jeonju 1, Gyeongju 2, Busan 3 | Apr–May, Oct–Nov | ₩130,000–220,000 |
| 14 days | Seoul → Gyeongju → Busan → fly → Jeju → fly → Seoul | Seoul 5, Gyeongju 2, Busan 3, Jeju 4 | Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct | ₩140,000–240,000 |
| 21 days | 14-day route plus Gangwon (Seoraksan, Sokcho) and the south coast (Tongyeong) | Add Sokcho 2, Tongyeong 2, Seoul 2–3 | May–Jun, Sep–Oct | ₩130,000–230,000 |
Daily cost is a 2026 estimate and excludes flights; Jeju adds a car or tour cost of roughly ₩60,000–100,000 a day.
Step by step: building the route
Start with the transport spine, not the sight list. One KTX line runs Seoul – Daejeon – Daegu – Gyeongju – Busan, so anything on that line costs you almost no travel time. Jeju is a flight from Gimpo or Busan, and the east coast (Gangneung, Sokcho) is a separate bus or train leg from Seoul.
For a first trip, four nights in Seoul is the minimum that covers the palaces, a market, a neighbourhood evening and one day out. Busan needs three nights to justify the trip: beaches, a seafood market, Gamcheon and one temple or coastal walk. Gyeongju works as one or two nights between Seoul and Busan, and Jeonju is a 1 h 40 KTX ride from Seoul that fits a single night.
Build in one slower day for every four moving days. South Korea is compact, but packing a new city into every morning is how people end up remembering only train stations.
- 5 days: Seoul only — do not add Busan; you will spend a third of the trip in transit.
- 7 days: Seoul 4 + Busan 3, fly home from Busan (PUS) or ferry to Fukuoka.
- 10 days: add Jeonju (1 night) and Gyeongju (2 nights) on the way south.
- 14 days: add Jeju (4 nights) with a car, flying back to Gimpo for the last night.
- 21 days: add Gangwon (Sokcho/Seoraksan, 2 nights) and the south coast (Tongyeong, 2 nights).
The 7-day itinerary in detail
Days 1–4, Seoul. Land at Incheon (ICN), take the AREX train into the city and stay in Myeongdong or Hongdae. Give one day to Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon and Insadong; one to a market and a neighbourhood such as Ikseondong or Seongsu; one to a day trip — Suwon's Hwaseong Fortress is an easy half day, the DMZ is a full one; and keep the last morning free for anything you missed.
Day 5, Seoul to Busan by KTX. Trains run roughly every 20–30 minutes and take about 2 h 30–3 h (check). Book a seat in advance for Friday, Sunday and holiday travel. Stay near Seomyeon or Haeundae.
Days 5–7, Busan. One day for Gamcheon village and Jagalchi seafood market, one for Haeundae beach and a coastal walk or temple, and a half day for whatever the weather allows. Fly out of Busan (PUS) if you can, or take the ferry to Fukuoka to continue in Japan.
| Day | Base | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Seoul | Arrive, AREX to city, Myeongdong or Hongdae evening |
| 2 | Seoul | Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon, Insadong |
| 3 | Seoul | Market and neighbourhood day; Hongdae or Seongsu at night |
| 4 | Seoul | Day trip: Suwon (half day) or the DMZ (full day) |
| 5 | Busan | Morning KTX, afternoon Gamcheon village |
| 6 | Busan | Jagalchi market, Haeundae, coastal walk or temple |
| 7 | Busan | Half day, then fly from PUS or ferry to Fukuoka |
Two weeks: mainland plus Jeju
The 14-day version keeps the same spine and adds Jeju. Seoul 5 nights, Gyeongju 2, Busan 3, Jeju 4, then fly back to Gimpo for the last night or connect straight to Incheon for the flight home.
Gyeongju is the Silla capital: tomb mounds, Cheomseongdae, Bulguksa and Seokguram, best seen by bicycle. Two nights let you do the historic core one day and the mountains the next.
On Jeju, rent a car at the airport — buses exist but eat the day. Base one or two nights in Jeju City and the rest in Seogwipo, and plan around Hallasan, the crater cones and one Olle trail rather than trying to circle the island every day. Book the car and the Gimpo–Jeju flights early in peak season (check).
- Seoul 5 nights — palaces, markets, one day trip, one rest day.
- Gyeongju 2 nights — historic core by bike, then Bulguksa and Seokguram.
- Busan 3 nights — Gamcheon, Jagalchi, Haeundae, one temple or coastal walk.
- Jeju 4 nights — car required in practice; split between Jeju City and Seogwipo.
Three weeks: add Gangwon and the south coast
With 21 days you can keep the 14-day route and add two regions that most one-week trips miss. Add two nights in Sokcho for Seoraksan National Park and the east-coast beaches, reached by bus or train from Seoul; and two nights in Tongyeong on the south coast for islands, a cable car and seafood, reachable from Busan.
Keep two or three nights in Seoul at the end. It is the easiest place to fly home from, and it absorbs a weather day or a missed connection without wrecking the trip.
If you would rather go slower, cut Jeju and give the extra nights to Gangwon and the south coast. Both are cheaper than Jeju in peak season and need no car.
| Stop | Nights | Why add it |
|---|---|---|
| Seoul | 5 | Palaces, markets, day trips, flight home |
| Gyeongju | 2 | Silla tombs, Bulguksa, Seokguram |
| Busan | 3 | Beaches, markets, hillside village |
| Jeju | 4 | Volcano, Hallasan, Olle trails; needs a car |
| Sokcho / Seoraksan | 2 | Granite peaks, east-coast beaches |
| Tongyeong | 2 | South-coast islands, cable car, seafood |
| Seoul | 2–3 | Buffer nights before the flight home |
Notes and common mistakes
Do not try to see the whole country in a week. The single most common planning error is adding Jeju to a 7-day trip; the flights and the car hire eat two days and you see less of Seoul and Busan.
Check the calendar before you book. Chuseok and Lunar New Year move every year and close many businesses; cherry-blossom season (late March to mid-April) and autumn leaves (late October to early November) fill Seoul hotels and KTX seats weeks ahead (check). Summer is hot and wet, and winter is cold enough to change what you can do outdoors.
Buy a T-money card for buses and the subway in Seoul and Busan, and keep some cash for markets and small restaurants. Tipping is not expected.
- Book KTX seats and Seoul beds 2–4 weeks ahead in spring and autumn (check).
- Fly into Incheon and out of Busan if your route allows it; it saves a backtrack day.
- Keep one unplanned day per week for weather and rest.
- Jeju without a car is possible but slow; budget for a car or a day tour.

Questions people ask
What is a good 7-day itinerary for South Korea?
Four nights in Seoul, then three in Busan by KTX. In Seoul do the palaces, a market day, one neighbourhood evening and one day trip (Suwon or the DMZ). In Busan do Gamcheon, Jagalchi market, Haeundae and one coastal walk. Fly home from Busan if you can.
How many weeks should I spend in South Korea?
One week covers Seoul and Busan. Two weeks adds Gyeongju and Jeju. Three weeks adds Gangwon (Sokcho and Seoraksan) and the south coast. Fewer than five days: stay in Seoul and day-trip.
What is the best route through South Korea?
Follow the KTX line: Seoul – Daejeon – Daegu – Gyeongju – Busan. Add Jeonju as a branch from Seoul and Jeju as a flight from Gimpo or Busan. This keeps travel time low and avoids backtracking.
Is 5 days enough for Seoul and Busan?
No. Five days is a Seoul-only trip with one day out to Suwon or the DMZ. Adding Busan means losing most of a day each way and seeing both cities badly.
When is the best time to do these itineraries?
April to June and September to November. Spring and autumn are the busiest, so book KTX seats and Seoul hotels two to four weeks ahead. July and August are hot and wet; December to February is cold.
Do I need a car in South Korea?
No for Seoul, Busan, Gyeongju or Jeonju — trains, buses and the subway cover them. On Jeju a car is the practical way to see the island; buses exist but are slow.
How much does a 7-day trip cost?
Roughly ₩130,000–220,000 a day per person mid-range in 2026, excluding flights. That covers a private room or good hostel, KTX and buses, one paid attraction most days and two restaurant meals.
