The Southern Coast is desert: irrigated valleys, cold-water islands and pre-Inca cemeteries, with Arequipa as the only large city and the only real base. North of Nazca the Panamericana has frequent buses and hostels; south of Nazca it thins to overnight expresses and shared cars, so short daytime legs need a colectivo. Give the region 3–5 nights if you add Arequipa and Colca, 2 nights if you only want Paracas, Ica and Nazca.

- South of Nazca, long-distance buses often pass at night and skip small towns; a daytime plan may mean two colectivos instead of one bus.
- Coastal fog (garúa) and cold Humboldt water make Paracas and the islands chilly even in summer — bring a windproof layer.
- Arequipa and Colca are high; do not schedule Colca for your first morning off a night bus.
