Best places to visit in Spain: top cities, regions and sights

For a first trip, visit Madrid or Barcelona for 3–4 nights, then take one high-speed train to Andalusia — Seville, Córdoba and Granada — for 4–6 nights. Add Valencia, San Sebastián, Mallorca or Tenerife only on a second trip or a longer one. Change the plan if you have under 7 days: pick one city and one region.

How to choose, step by step

Start with time, not with a list. Spain is large: Madrid to Barcelona is about 2 h 30 by high-speed train, Madrid to Seville about 2 h 30, and the islands or the north coast need a flight. Every extra region costs you most of a day in transit.

With 7 days, do Madrid (3 nights), then Córdoba (1), Seville (2) and Granada (1), flying home from Granada or Málaga. With 10 days, add Barcelona at the start and fly into Barcelona, out of Seville or Madrid. With 14 days, add Toledo as a night from Madrid and finish in Málaga. Only at 21 days does the north coast — Bilbao, San Sebastián, Santiago — fit comfortably alongside Andalusia.

Match the region to the season. Andalusia is at its best March–May and October–November; July and August are punishing inland, with Seville and Córdoba regularly above 40 °C. The north coast (Green Spain) is the summer answer: Bilbao, San Sebastián and Galicia stay cooler and greener. The Canary Islands and Mallorca work in spring, autumn and winter, when the mainland is cold.

Book the fixed pieces early: Alhambra tickets in Granada sell out, high-speed trains get more expensive closer to the date, and Mallorca and San Sebastián hotels fill in July and August. Everything else — tapas, beaches, old towns — you can decide on the ground.

  • 7 days: Madrid → Córdoba → Seville → Granada
  • 10 days: Barcelona → Madrid → Seville (+ Córdoba)
  • 14 days: add Toledo and finish in Málaga
  • 21 days: add Bilbao, San Sebastián and Santiago

Notes

Prices, opening hours and train timetables change; treat the figures here as 2026 estimates and confirm the day before you travel. Summer heat in inland Andalusia is a real safety issue, not just discomfort: plan museums and indoor sights for the middle of the day and walk in the early morning and evening.

Spain has several co-official languages — Catalan in Barcelona and Mallorca, Basque in Bilbao and San Sebastián, Galician in Santiago. Spanish works everywhere, but place names on signs may appear in the local language. Tipping is small and optional; a euro or two or rounding up is normal.

Strikes and regional holidays can affect trains and museums. Keep one spare half-day per week and check the operator's site before a long transfer.

Questions people ask

What are the best places to visit in Spain?

Madrid and Barcelona for museums, Gaudí and nightlife; Seville, Granada and Córdoba for Andalusian palaces, the Alhambra and tapas; Valencia for paella and beaches; San Sebastián and Bilbao for the Basque north; Mallorca and Tenerife for islands and winter sun.

How many days do you need in Spain?

Seven days covers Madrid and Andalusia. Ten days adds Barcelona. Fourteen days adds Toledo and Málaga. Three weeks lets you combine the north coast with the south. Under five days, stay in one city and take day trips.

Which areas of Spain suit a first visit?

Madrid or Barcelona as a first base, then Andalusia — Seville, Córdoba and Granada. Save the islands, Galicia and the north coast for a second trip unless you have three weeks or want a beach-focused holiday.

When is the best time to visit Spain?

April to June and September to October suit most of the country. Inland Andalusia is best March–May and October–November. For the north coast, go June–September; for the Canary Islands and Mallorca, spring, autumn and winter work well.

Do I need a visa for Spain?

US, UK, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and Irish passport holders can usually enter visa-free for short stays under Schengen rules, within a 90/180-day limit. Other nationalities may need a Schengen visa. Check official sources before booking.

How do you travel between Spanish cities?

High-speed AVE trains link Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Valencia and Málaga, with Madrid–Seville and Madrid–Barcelona around 2 h 30. Granada, the north coast and the islands are easier by bus or short flight.
