Summary table: who, when and what it costs
Sri Lanka rewards one loop rather than a checklist. The table below matches the main places to a first visit, the months that suit them and a rough 2026 cost band per person per night, mid-range, excluding flights.
| Place | Best for | Nights | Best months | Cost band per night (2026 estimate) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Colombo | Arrival, food and markets | 1–2 | Dec–Mar | USD 40–90 |
| Sigiriya / Cultural Triangle | Rock fortress, ancient cities | 2–3 | Jan–Sep | USD 35–80 |
| Kandy | Temple of the Tooth, hill line | 2 | Jan–Apr | USD 30–70 |
| Nuwara Eliya | Tea country, Horton Plains | 1–2 | Jan–Apr | USD 35–80 |
| Ella | Walks, Nine Arches, train | 2–3 | Jan–Apr | USD 25–60 |

| Trincomalee | East-coast beaches, whales | 3 | May–Sep | USD 30–70 |
| Jaffna | Tamil north, temples, islands | 2–3 | Jan–Sep | USD 25–60 |
Bands are 2026 estimates for a mid-range double room or a guesthouse plus local food and shared transport; a car and driver adds roughly USD 50–70 a day (check).
The places, in the order most first trips run them
Start in Colombo or Negombo. Colombo is the air hub and the country's food city: Galle Face at sunset, the Fort, Pettah markets and Gangaramaya temple fill a day. Negombo, 30–40 minutes from the airport, is the easier first night if you land late. One or two nights is enough before heading inland.
Then the Cultural Triangle. Sigiriya is the rock fortress and the natural base, with Dambulla's cave temples, Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura within a few hours. Two to three nights here, starting each site at opening, beats rushing all four in one day. Anuradhapura, the first capital, deserves its own night if you have 14 days.
Kandy comes next: the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, the lake, and the start of the hill railway. Two nights. From Kandy the train climbs to Nuwara Eliya and Ella through tea country; it is slow and often full, so reserve seats when booking opens (check). Nuwara Eliya sits at about 1,900 m and is cool enough for a jacket; Horton Plains is a pre-dawn start from there.
Ella is the hill village most travellers use as a base: Little Adam's Peak, the Nine Arches Bridge and tea walks. Two to three nights. From Ella, most loops drop south through Udawalawe or Yala for a safari night, then reach the coast at Mirissa, Weligama or Unawatuna, with Galle's Dutch fort as the anchor. Galle and the south coast take two to three nights; December to April is the season.
If you travel May to September, flip the coast: Trincomalee and Arugam Bay on the east side are in season, with whale watching off Trincomalee in spring (check). Jaffna, in the Tamil north, is a two- to three-night add-on for temples, the fort and the islands, and it works most of the year.
A car and driver makes every leg easier; trains are scenic but slow. Keep the final night within about two hours of the airport, and leave a wide margin around your flight.
- 7 nights: Colombo → Kandy → Ella → Galle
- 10 nights: Negombo → Sigiriya → Kandy → Ella → Yala → Galle
- 14 nights: add Anuradhapura, Nuwara Eliya and beach days
Notes before you book
Pick the coast by month, not by preference: the south and west run December–April, the east May–September. Outside those windows you get rain and closed guesthouses.
The hill train and the popular safari parks sell out in peak season; book transport and park jeeps ahead (check).
Temple sites require covered shoulders and knees, and shoes off; carry socks for hot stone.
Check the ETA visa route and any current advisories before you pay for flights, and confirm your travel insurance covers the activities you plan.
- South and west coast: December–April
- East coast: May–September
- Cultural Triangle: January–September
- Hill country: January–April for the clearest views
