- South America ↗Above 2,500 m (Bogotá, Quito, Cusco, La Paz) keep the first day light; sleep lower where you can (Sacred Valley before Cusco) and descend if headache comes with vomiting or confusion.
- South America ↗A yellow fever certificate is required on arrival in French Guiana, and asked for on some routes into Bolivia, Paraguay, Suriname and Guyana, or when arriving from Amazon areas — vaccinate at least 10 days before travel and carry the card.
- South America ↗Overnight buses are the norm in Argentina, Chile and Peru, but pick top-tier companies and keep valuables on your body; on-board thefts from overhead racks are the common loss.
- Falkland Islands ↗Entry rules are set by the Falkland Islands Government, not the UK: visitors need a return ticket, pre-booked accommodation, enough funds and medical insurance covering evacuation. Check the official rules for your passport.
- Falkland Islands ↗Keep at least 6 m from penguins and seals, stay out of marked colonies, and follow landowners' rules: most land is privately owned farmland.
- Falkland Islands ↗Strict biosecurity: declare food, plants, seeds and soil; clean boots and outdoor gear before arrival and before landing on each outer island.
- Stanley and East Falkland ↗Off-road tracks beyond Stanley need a 4x4 and local knowledge: go with an operator, especially to Volunteer Point.
- Stanley ↗Mount Pleasant is 55 km from Stanley and there is no public bus: book the road transfer with your lodging before you fly, and give them your flight number.
- Stanley ↗Wind and cold hit even in summer: carry waterproof outer layers and a warm layer in your day bag, and plan indoor stops for rain.

Know before you go
- The main animal is the Magellanic penguin, a burrow nester that is here roughly from October to March. Gentoos and other birds and seals can appear (check the season).
- The walk starts at the car park and follows a marked path with viewing points; it is easy but exposed to wind.
- Some areas beside the track are fenced or signposted from past mine clearance: never leave the marked path.
- There is no shop, cafe or toilet at the site (check); use the Visitor Centre before you go.
- Wind and cold matter more than rain: pack a hat, gloves and a windproof shell even in summer.
- Book a taxi both ways; there is no public bus and mobile signal can be patchy.
