What Östermalm is like
Östermalm is the north-eastern borough of central Stockholm, running from Birger Jarlsgatan — the long street that separates it from Norrmalm and Vasastan — east to the harbour and the edge of Djurgården. The core is 19th-century apartment blocks along wide, tree-lined boulevards, with upmarket shopping around Stureplan and Östermalmstorg and palatial waterfront buildings on Strandvägen.
The name means "the eastern malm" and came into use in the late 19th century, when the middle class built grand residence blocks along the water. Before that the land was royal farms, then army quarters and a drill field called Gärdet, which is still open ground today. The plain 1930s apartment rows on part of that field influenced housing projects elsewhere.
The outer part of the borough is different in feel: Stockholm University and the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) sit in Norra Djurgården, and the harbour area — Värtahamnen, Frihamnen and Loudden — handles Baltic ferries and cruise ships. Part of the old warehouse district now holds film and television studios.

| Red-line metro plus the Djurgården tram | Some blocks are a 10–15 minute walk from any metro station |

| Good for cruise passengers at Värtahamnen and Frihamnen | The harbour terminals are a long walk from the metro with luggage |
Should you stay in Östermalm?
Yes, if your trip is about museums, architecture, the waterfront and easy access to Djurgården, and you are happy to pay for a calm, central address. Östermalmstorg and Stureplan put you on the red line with Gamla stan two stops away, and the Spårväg City tram runs from Central Station along Strandvägen to Djurgården — a practical and pleasant way to reach the Vasa Museum and Skansen without changing trains.
No, if you want cheap dorm beds, late bars or a younger crowd. Södermalm has the nightlife and the hostel supply; Norrmalm is the transport and shopping hub with more mid-range hotels; Vasastan and Hagastaden is quieter still and often cheaper. Gamla stan is central but tourist-heavy and short on everyday shops.
Within Östermalm, the choice matters. Around Stureplan you get clubs, bars and noise until late. Around Karlaplan and Gärdet you get embassies, parks and near silence. Near Östermalmstorg you get the market hall, metro and shops. If you are arriving by cruise, Värtahamnen and Frihamnen are in the borough but a walk of roughly 15–25 minutes from Gärdet metro with bags — take a taxi with a visible price tag rather than an unmarked car.
- Choose Stureplan for nightlife and central shopping, and accept the noise.
- Choose Karlaplan or Gärdet for quiet streets, parks and family stays.
- Choose Östermalmstorg for the metro, market hall and walkability.
- Book early for May–September and December; prices peak then.
Eating and drinking in Östermalm
Östermalmstorgs saluhall, the market hall by the square, is the easiest single stop: a food hall with counters for cheese, fish, meat, bread and coffee, plus cooked lunches. It is the place to try Swedish classics without a full restaurant bill — toast Skagen (shrimp on bread), herring plates, meatballs with lingonberry and mashed potato, and cinnamon buns. Prices are mid-range; a sit-down lunch is roughly 120–200 kr, a coffee and bun about 50–70 kr (2026 estimate).
Around Stureplan and along Birger Jarlsgatan the restaurants are upmarket and priced accordingly, with a cluster of bars that fill after 22:00. For cheaper everyday food, look at the streets nearer Karlaplan and Gärdet, where lunch deals (dagens lunch) run about 110–150 kr on weekdays. Swedish alcohol is sold in state-run Systembolaget shops, not supermarkets; bars and restaurants serve it, and tipping is included, with 5–10% added for good table service.
Vegetarian and vegan options are common in central Stockholm, and most menus mark them. If you have a serious allergy, ask staff directly — kitchens here are used to it and English is widely spoken.
| Where | What it is good for | Rough cost |

| Karlaplan and Gärdet streets | Weekday dagens lunch, neighbourhood cafés | Lunch 110–150 kr |

Getting to and around Östermalm
The red line of the Stockholm metro serves the borough: Östermalmstorg for the square and Stureplan, Karlaplan for the eastern core and the History Museum, Stadion and Tekniska högskolan for the north, and Gärdet for the drill field and the harbour approach. From Central Station it is two or three stops, a few minutes. Use an SL travel card or tap a contactless bank card; single tickets bought in advance cost less than those bought at the gate (check current fares).
The Spårväg City tram runs from Central Station through Norrmalm and along Strandvägen to Djurgården, which makes it the simplest way to reach the island's museums from an Östermalm hotel. Buses fill the gaps, and most of central Östermalm is walkable: Stureplan to Gamla stan is about 20–25 minutes on foot, Karlaplan to Djurgården about 15 minutes over the bridge.
From the airport, Arlanda Express reaches Central Station in about 20 minutes, and the airport coaches take longer but cost less; from there take the metro or a taxi. If you arrive by cruise at Värtahamnen or Frihamnen, taxis wait at the terminal — check the yellow price tag on the window before you get in, as fares vary widely.

What there is to do in Östermalm
The Swedish History Museum on Narvavägen covers Sweden from the Ice Age to the present, with a strong medieval section and a Gold Room of Bronze Age to 16th-century treasures; the Viking exhibition was expanded in 2021. The Economy Museum – Royal Coin Cabinet shares the same address and tells the story of money and finance. Both are near Karlaplan metro. The Army Museum on Riddargatan covers the rise and fall of the Swedish Empire and Sweden's role in the world wars, with a broader social angle than a plain weapons display.
Culture continues with the Royal Dramatic Theatre at Nybroplan, Sweden's national spoken-word stage, which offers guided tours in English, and Berwaldhallen on Dag Hammarskjölds väg, home of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. Galleries cluster around Sturegatan and Karlavägen. The waterfront walk along Strandvägen, past the palatial blocks, is the borough's signature stroll and leads towards Djurgården.
For open space, Gärdet gives you the old drill field with walking and running paths, and the water at Djurgårdsbrunnsviken is close by. Most of the museums charge admission — around 140–150 kr for adults, with children often free (2026 estimate); check opening days, as several close on Mondays.
