Best places to visit in Sweden: top cities, regions and sights

For a first trip, base 3–4 nights in Stockholm with one archipelago day, then add Gothenburg or Malmö by train. Treat Swedish Lapland (Abisko, Kiruna) as a separate flight or night train, not a road trip. Skip the north if you have under 10 days.

Sweden is in the Schengen area, so most US, UK, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and Irish passport holders can enter visa-free for short stays; confirm your own case on the visa page. The table below sorts the main destinations by when they work and what they cost in time and money.

Nights are the minimum that does the place justice. Cost level is relative within Sweden, not against your home country.

Step by step: how to choose

Step 1 — Decide the shape of the trip. Under 7 days: Stockholm only, with one archipelago day. 7–10 days: Stockholm plus Gothenburg or Malmö. 10 days or more: add Lapland or Gotland. Trains and ferries cover the south well; the north needs a flight or the night train.

Step 2 — Pick your season. May–September is the easy window: long light, open islands, boat schedules running. December gives Christmas markets and dark, short days in Stockholm. February–March is the aurora window in Lapland. Late June is Midsummer, when some small-town services close and accommodation books out.

Step 3 — Book the fixed pieces first. Archipelago ferries, Gotland ferries and Lapland flights and night-train berths are the constraints; city hotels are easier to move. If you want the Icehotel or a specific aurora week, book months ahead.

Step 4 — Chain the stops by rail. Stockholm–Gothenburg and Stockholm–Malmö are straightforward train rides; Malmö–Copenhagen takes about 25 minutes, so you can fly home from Copenhagen instead of doubling back.

Step 5 — Add day trips from your base. From Stockholm: Uppsala, Drottningholm, Birka and the archipelago. From Gothenburg: the southern islands and Bohuslän. From Malmö: Lund and Copenhagen.

  • 7 days: Stockholm 3 nights → archipelago 1 night → Gothenburg 3 nights
  • 10 days: Stockholm 4 nights → night train → Abisko 3 nights → Kiruna 2 nights → fly back
  • 14 days: Stockholm 4 → Visby 2 → Gothenburg 3 → Bohuslän 2 → Malmö 3

Notes

Distances are real. Stockholm to Kiruna is roughly 1,200 km, about 15–17 hours by night train or 1.5 hours by flight; do not plan it as a day of driving. Stockholm to Gothenburg is around 470 km, about 3–3.5 hours by train. Stockholm to Malmö is about 600 km, roughly 4.5 hours by train.

Prices are a 2026 estimate and Sweden is expensive: budget for high accommodation and food costs, and check the costs page before you commit to a long trip. Alcohol is sold in state-run Systembolaget shops with limited hours, which changes how evenings work.

Weather is the other constraint. Summer days in the south are long and mild; the north in winter is genuinely cold, with short daylight, so pack for it and check local advice before any mountain or ice activity. Right of public access lets you walk and camp on uncultivated land with care, but it comes with rules.

This page is general information, not a booking service. Verify ferry and train timetables, museum opening hours and any seasonal closures close to your dates.

FAQ

Questions people ask

What are the best places to visit in Sweden?

Stockholm first, with 3–4 nights and an archipelago day. Then Gothenburg or Malmö by train. Add Visby and Gotland in summer, or Abisko and Kiruna in February–March for auroras, if you have 10 days or more.

How many days do you need in Sweden?

Seven days covers Stockholm and one more city. Ten days lets you add Lapland or Gotland. Two weeks gives you three cities, an island and the west coast without rushing. Under five days, stay in Stockholm.

Which areas of Sweden suit a first visit?

Svealand around Stockholm and Uppsala, plus Götaland for Gothenburg, Malmö and the south coast. Norrland, the north, is a separate trip: fly or take the night train rather than driving.

When is the best time to visit Sweden?

May–September for cities, islands and the coast, with the longest daylight. December for Christmas markets in Stockholm. February–March for auroras and winter activities in Lapland. Late June is Midsummer, when some places close.

Is Sweden expensive to visit?

Yes, by US, UK and Australian standards. Accommodation and restaurant meals are the big costs; trains and ferries are reasonable if booked early. Check the costs page for a daily budget before you book.

Do I need a visa for Sweden?

Most US, UK, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and Irish passport holders can enter visa-free for short stays as part of the Schengen area. Rules vary by passport and can change, so confirm on the visa page and with an official source.

Can I combine Sweden with Copenhagen?

Yes. Malmö is about 25 minutes from Copenhagen by train, so you can end in Malmö and fly home from Copenhagen instead of returning to Stockholm.
