Best places to visit in Switzerland: top cities, regions and sights

For a first trip, pick one city base (Zurich or Lucerne, 2–3 nights), one mountain base (Jungfrau region or Zermatt, 3–4 nights), and Lake Geneva for 2 nights if time allows. Skip a hire car: trains reach every base. Add Ticino or the Engadin only on a second visit.

How to choose, step by step

Step 1: decide how many nights you have. With 7 nights, take Lucerne (3) plus Lauterbrunnen or Interlaken (4). With 10, add Zermatt (2) and Lake Geneva (2). With 14, run the grand rail tour through St Moritz and Lugano.

Step 2: pick your mountain base by what you want to see. The Jungfrau region gives valleys, waterfalls and the Jungfraujoch; Zermatt gives the Matterhorn and the Gornergrat; the Engadin gives wide high valleys and the Bernina line.

Step 3: pick your city base by arrival airport. Zurich suits Lucerne and the east; Geneva suits Lake Geneva, Lausanne and Zermatt via Visp. Both have direct trains to Interlaken.

Step 4: check the season. Mountain villages fill in Jul–Sep and Dec–Mar; many lifts and boats run reduced hours in shoulder months.

Step 5: book trains and mountain stays early. Seat reservations are not needed on most trains, but popular panoramic routes and village hotels sell out.

  • 7 nights: Lucerne 3 + Lauterbrunnen or Interlaken 4
  • 10 nights: Lucerne 3 + Bernese Oberland 3 + Zermatt 2 + Montreux or Lausanne 2
  • 14 nights: Zurich 1 + Lucerne 3 + Bernese Oberland 4 + Zermatt 2 + St Moritz 2 + Lugano 2

Notes before you book

Prices in Switzerland are high by any standard: budget carefully for hotels, mountain railways and meals. A rail pass often pays off on a multi-stop trip, but compare it against point-to-point tickets for your exact route.

A hire car is rarely worth it. Villages such as Zermatt, Mürren, Wengen and Gimmelwald are car-free or restricted, and parking in cities is expensive. Trains, postbuses and boats cover the same ground.

Weather changes fast above 1,500 m. Keep a flexible day for the big summit, since cloud can hide the view you paid for. Cheaper viewpoints such as Harder Kulm, Männlichen and Rigi often deliver as much as the priciest ones.

Check opening dates for cable cars, mountain huts and lake boats, and check whether your travel dates fall in a Swiss public holiday or school break, when domestic demand spikes.

Questions people ask

What are the best places to visit in Switzerland?

For a first trip: Lucerne or Zurich as a city base, the Jungfrau region (Lauterbrunnen, Wengen, Mürren, Grindelwald) as a mountain base, and Zermatt for the Matterhorn. Add Lake Geneva, Bern, Basel, Ticino or the Engadin if you have more nights.

How many days do you need in Switzerland?

Seven nights covers one city and one mountain base well. Ten nights adds Zermatt and Lake Geneva. Fourteen nights allows a rail loop through the Bernese Oberland, Zermatt, St Moritz and Lugano. Fewer than five nights means choosing one base only.

Which areas of Switzerland suit a first visit?

Central Switzerland (Lucerne, Rigi, Pilatus) and the Bernese Oberland (Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald) are the easiest introduction: short train legs, English widely spoken, and mountain views without long transfers. Zermatt is the classic second stop.

Do I need a car to see these places?

No. Trains, postbuses and boats reach every base listed here, and several villages are car-free or restrict cars. A car adds rental, fuel, tunnel fees and parking costs, and is slower in cities.

When is the best time to visit Switzerland?

Jun–Sep for hiking, lake boats and long days; Dec–Mar for snow and ski resorts. May and October are quieter and cheaper but some lifts and boats run reduced schedules (check).

Is Switzerland expensive to visit?

Yes. Hotels, mountain railways and restaurant meals are among Europe's priciest. Costs drop if you stay in a valley town rather than a summit village, self-cater some meals, and use a rail pass for multiple long legs.
