Before you start
Welcome to the Opera House & Botanic Garden audio walk in Sydney. 3 stops: Sydney Opera House, Royal Botanic Garden Sydney and Art Gallery of New South Wales. Sunrise-to-noon cluster: Bennelong Point at opening, then the Botanic Garden lawns and the harbour path; flat, open, little shade on the point.
Circular Quay East to Bennelong Point and the Botanic Garden's northern lawns; the Opera House site, not the Domain. Underfoot: paved harbour path and lawn; slope: flat; shade: medium.
Sydney is a harbour first and a city second. The water shaped where people settled, where the roads run and why so many trips are a ferry ride.
Before you start: Opera House sails and forecourt barriers: stay behind the barriers; drones are restricted around the harbour. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.
1. Sydney Opera House
Look for
- Forecourt and western steps
- Lower concourse
- Joan Sutherland Theatre or Concert Hall (tour or show)
Stop 1 of 3: Sydney Opera House. Arrival point: Circular Quay East, then the harbour path to Bennelong Point.
Walk the forecourt and Bennelong Point at opening or late afternoon; book a tour or performance ahead through the official site only.
Look for Forecourt and western steps: The best angle on the sails; free. Look for Lower concourse: Walk the waterfront under the podium; cafes and bars with harbour views. Look for Joan Sutherland Theatre or Concert Hall (tour or show): The only way inside; the tour covers a hall and the story of the building.
Sydney begins long before 1788. The First Fleet, eleven ships carrying convicts, marines and officers under Captain Arthur Phillip, reached Botany Bay in January 1788, judged it poor, and moved a few days later to Sydney Cove, where fresh water ran into a deep anchorage. The colony was named after Lord Sydney, the British home secretary.
Stay behind the barriers on the forecourt; no drones. Busiest 10:00–15:00 and on cruise-ship days; the forecourt is calm at opening. Allowed on the forecourt and concourse; not during performances or inside halls unless the tour says so.
Walk:Next, stop 2: Royal Botanic Garden Sydney. It's about 8 minutes on foot, about 850 metres to the south. Route: Walk the harbour path to the Botanic Garden. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.
2. Royal Botanic Garden Sydney
Look for
- Farm Cove path
- Palm grove and lawns
- Mrs Macquarie's Chair
- Herb and rose beds
- Farm Cove with the Opera House behind
Stop 2 of 3: Royal Botanic Garden Sydney. Arrival point: Botanic Garden gate at the Opera House end of the harbour path.
Free garden on the harbour: walk it in the morning or after 16:00, keep to the shaded paths, and use it as the rest stop between the Opera House and Mrs Macquarie's Chair. On a first visit: Free, flat, with the best views of the Opera House.
Look for Farm Cove path: Harbour views and the Opera House across the water. Look for Palm grove and lawns: Shade and a place to sit. Look for Mrs Macquarie's Chair: The famous view; busy at sunset. Look for Herb and rose beds: Quiet corners near the centre. For a photo: Farm Cove with the Opera House behind, early morning or late afternoon.
Keep to the paths; do not feed the birds or bats. Quiet on weekday mornings; lawns are busy on summer weekends. Allowed outdoors; check signs inside galleries and exhibitions.
