JR Pass — buy or not?

Enter your legs. On a Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka trip the nationwide 7-day pass (¥53,000 from 1 October 2026) loses to point-to-point tickets; it pays only with two or more long Shinkansen round trips inside the pass days.

How it works

  1. 1

    Check you can buy it

Only for visitors entering on the 'temporary visitor' status (the landing stamp or sticker); other eligibility cases are narrow (check).

  2. 2

Buy online on the official site, or from an authorised agent abroad

The official site lets you reserve seats before pick-up. Agents issue an exchange order to swap in Japan (check the validity window).

    Official site ↗
  3. 3

    Pick the start date

The pass runs on consecutive calendar days, ending at midnight — not 24-hour periods. Start it on the day of your first long leg.

  4. 4

    Collect it with your passport

At a major JR station ticket office or a pass-enabled ticket machine; the name must match your passport.

  5. 5

Reserve seats — free with the pass

At green reserved-seat machines, ticket offices or online. Reserve early for Friday–Sunday, holidays and trains with oversized-baggage seats.

  6. 6

    Ride through the automatic gates

Insert the pass ticket into the gate and collect it; carry your passport, staff may ask.

  7. 7

Want Nozomi or Mizuho? Buy the special ticket first

    ¥4,960 (≈ US$35) Tokyo–Kyoto or Tokyo–Shin-Osaka, ¥6,500 (≈ US$45) Tokyo–Hiroshima, at the same machines and offices.

Rules that trip people

  • ruleNozomi and Mizuho are not included. Pass holders pay a special ticket: ¥4,180 (≈ US$30) Tokyo–Nagoya, ¥4,960 (≈ US$35) Tokyo–Kyoto/Shin-Osaka, ¥6,500 (≈ US$45) Tokyo–Hiroshima, ¥4,960 (≈ US$35) Shin-Osaka–Hakata. Boarding without it means paying on board.
  • ruleDays are calendar days. A 7-day pass started at 18:00 on Monday ends at midnight on Sunday.
  • ruleNon-JR lines are not covered. Tokyo Metro, Osaka Metro, Keihan, Hankyu, Kintetsu, Nankai and city buses charge separately — use an IC card.
  • checkPrices rise on 1 October 2026. 7 days ¥50,000 (≈ US$350) → ¥53,000 (≈ US$400); 14 days ¥80,000 (≈ US$550) → ¥84,000 (≈ US$600); 21 days ¥100,000 (≈ US$700) → ¥105,000 (≈ US$750) (ordinary). Which price applies depends on the purchase or issue date (check).
  • ruleBig bags need a special seat. Bags over 160 cm (L+W+H) on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen need a seat with the oversized-baggage area; reserve it with the pass. Bag rules
  • checkA lost pass is not replaced. Keep it with your passport; photograph the front (check the current policy).
  • tipThe pass rarely pays for Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka. One Tokyo ↔ Kyoto round trip is about ¥28,000 (≈ US$190); the 7-day pass is ¥53,000 (≈ US$400).
