Shinkansen with large bags
Bags over 160 cm (L+W+H) on the Tokaido/Sanyo/Kyushu Shinkansen need a reserved seat with the oversized-baggage area; over 250 cm is not allowed.

Does my bag need a reservation?
Add up length + width + height of your biggest bag, wheels and handles included.
A 28-inch case is usually about 185–200 cm in total; a 24-inch about 160–170 cm.
Rules by bag size
- ≤ 160 cm total
- No reservation needed for the bag; overhead rack or at your feet.
- 160–250 cm total
- Reserve a seat with the oversized-baggage area (or the space behind the last row).
- > 250 cm total
- Not allowed on board — forward it.
If it goes wrong
Boarded without the reservation: expect a fee and to be moved; forward the bag next time.
Luggage forwarding (takuhaibin) hotel-to-hotel, usually next day; the receiving property must accept it.

Questions
What happens if I board with a big bag and no reservation?
On the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen staff move you and the bag to a baggage space and charge a fee (¥1,000 (≈ US$7), check).
Does the rule count wheels and handles?
Yes. Measure the full outside size of the bag.
Is luggage forwarding reliable?
Very. It is usually next-day within Honshu; book at the hotel front desk or a convenience store and allow a day of slack.
