Getting around in Oslo
Trams, metro and buses are step-free at most stops, and most major sights have lifts and ramps. Cobbles and hills are the main obstacles, and ice makes pavements hard in winter.
- Streets:
- Flat in the centre; steep streets to the north; cobbles around the fortress.
- Public transit:
- Most trams and buses are low-floor; check the line and stop.
- Hotels:
- Newer hotels have lifts and step-free rooms; ask when you book.
- Sights:
- The Opera House, MUNCH and City Hall have lifts; the fortress has cobbles.
Medicines and health on the ground
The Norway guide lists no medicine paperwork. Check the official customs page for your medicines.
- Cold and ice:
- Wear shoes with grip and layers from November to March; ice is common.
- Water:
- Tap water is safe and cold; refill your bottle.
- Sun:
- Strong summer light and long days; use sun cream and an eye mask for sleep.
- Insurance:
- Buy travel insurance with medical cover; non-residents pay for care.

Ask your insurer
Age limits and prices differ by policy and the guides do not hold them, so put these to the insurer before you buy.
- What is the oldest age the policy covers, at purchase and on the last day of the trip?
- Does the price or the cover change after a certain age?
- Are existing conditions covered, and what must be declared?
- Does the cover include medical evacuation and trip interruption?
Not medical advice. This page does not know anyone’s health. Ask a doctor before the trip, and carry a list of medicines and conditions.
