TrailTrail, British Columbia

Give Trail one night as a smelter-town stop between Rossland and Castlegar; skip it as a base unless you are hiking the flag viewpoints.

Trail is a working smelter town of about 7,700 people on the Columbia River in the West Kootenays, 25 km from Castlegar and 6 km from Rossland. The Teck lead-zinc plant sits on the cliff above downtown, and that contrast is the reason to look. Sights are thin, hiking and the river walk are the draw, and most travellers use it for a night or a half-day between Rossland and Nelson.

About Trail

Trail is a small city in the West Kootenays of interior southeast British Columbia, with a population of 7,700 as of 2016. It lies on the Columbia River, roughly 25 km from Castlegar and close to Rossland, and about 10 km north of the USA border at Waneta. The skyline is dominated by the Teck Cominco smelter, the city's main employer, which stands on a cliff directly above the downtown commercial area. The city takes its name from the Dewdney Trail, which once ran through the area. It is also home to the largest hospital in the West Kootenay region.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

  • Teck Cominco Interpretive Centre — It is the starting point for tours of what the guide describes as the largest non-ferrous lead and zinc smelter in the world, with exhibits and displays on the plant's operations and history.
  • Downtown Trail — The compact retail and commercial district sits directly beneath the smelter's industrial structures at the top of a cliff, a contrast the guide singles out.
  • Columbia River Skywalk — A bridge at the south end of downtown, open only to pedestrians and cyclists, crosses the Columbia River.
  • Violin Lake — A lake reached by a 3.9 km hike each way, with popular hiking and biking trails around it.
  • Champion Lakes Provincial Park — The park has 6 km of trails suitable for day hikes, about 22 km east on Highway 3B plus 10 km on Champion Park Road.

Watch out

Safety

Trail is a small, low-crime town; the real risks are summer heat above 35 °C (95 °F), river fog on fall mornings, and bears on the Sunningdale and Mount Heinze trails. Downtown is fine on foot after dark.
  • Summer afternoons often pass 35 °C (95 °F); carry water on any hike.
  • Fall and winter bring dense river fog, worst overnight and in the morning.
  • Bear country on the Sunningdale and Mount Heinze trails: make noise, carry 1–2 L of water.
  • The Teck Cominco Interpretive Centre has been listed as closed since 2023: check before you plan around it.
  • Castlegar flights cancel in fog; Trail Regional is the safer booking.
