Rules in force · 8Drug trafficking can carry the death penalty in Singapore…
  • Southeast Asia ↗Drug trafficking can carry the death penalty in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Brunei and Myanmar; never carry a bag or parcel for anyone.
  • Southeast Asia ↗Carry a passport valid for at least six months from entry with two blank pages; airlines refuse boarding on less.
  • Thailand ↗Check entry rules and any arrival card on the official Thai government sites for your passport; visa-exempt stays and pre-arrival forms change.
  • Thailand ↗Do not criticise or mock the monarchy: insulting the royal family is a criminal offence.
  • Thailand ↗Temples and palaces: shoulders and knees covered, shoes off before entering halls.
  • Thailand ↗E-cigarettes and vapes are illegal to import or use; do not pack them.
  • Eastern Thailand ↗Check your government's travel advice before any travel near the Cambodian border; border crossings can close at short notice.
  • Eastern Thailand ↗Island ferries and speedboats are weather-dependent; confirm the day's last departure at the pier before you leave the mainland.

Trat is Thailand's easternmost province, best known for its islands — Ko Chang, Ko Kut and Ko Mak — plus fruit orchards and a long Cambodian border. Island piers sit 28–30 km from Trat town, so the practical move is to cross to the island and stay there; use Trat town only for the bus or airport leg.

One night in Trat town for the transfer, then cross to Ko Chang or Ko Kut and stay there
  • Trat town is a transport base, not a beach base: the nearest island piers are 28–30 km (17–19 mi) away, so a "day-trip to Ko Chang" costs 2–3 h of travel each way.
  • Ko Kut and Ko Mak boats are limited or suspended in the rainy season (roughly May–Oct); confirm sailings before booking a room.
  • Songthaews from the Trat Municipal Market stop running in the evening (most routes end by 18:00); after that you charter one at a negotiated price.

Bags between cities

There is no island-to-island luggage forwarding; take bags on the ferry yourself. Most Ko Chang and Ko Kut resorts meet guests at the pier, so confirm pickup when you book.
