Rules in force · 9Bags go from the car to the hotel door
  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Micronesia ↗Micronesia runs on a handful of weekly flights, so one cancellation can cost several days: build slack into every connection between islands.
  • Guam ↗US entry rules apply: visitors need a US visa, ESTA under the US Visa Waiver Program, or eligibility for the Guam–CNMI Visa Waiver Program. Check US Customs and Border Protection for your passport; the Guam–CNMI waiver does not allow onward travel to the rest of the US.
  • Guam ↗Guam is outside the US customs territory: complete the Guam customs declaration on arrival and declare food, plants and animal products.
  • Guam ↗Drive on the right, as in the mainland US; a valid foreign licence is accepted for short visits.
  • Tumon and Hagåtña ↗Buses are infrequent and a hire car or a tour is the practical way to the south; book it for the dry months if you can.
  • Tumon ↗Bags go from the car to the hotel door; the strip is flat but hot and the crossings are far apart.
  • Tumon ↗Plan the south and Hagåtña as one hire-car day: the strip has taxis but the sights beyond it do not.

Proa (Chamorro restaurant)

Walk-in Chamorro plates (red rice, kelaguen, grilled fish) on the Tumon strip; go for lunch or an early dinner and check hours the same day.

Hotel breakfast buffet (type, confirm locally)

A hotel breakfast buffet is the best value before a beach morning: US$20–40 with eggs, rice and fruit; go at 07:00 for the sea before the sun.

Late-night diner (type, confirm locally)

Late arrivals and jet-lagged nights need a fallback: an all-night or late diner on the strip serves US-style breakfast and plates until the early hours; confirm which one is open before you rely on it.

Chamorro plate-lunch shop (type, confirm locally)

A local plate-lunch shop gives the cheapest full Chamorro meal near Tumon: BBQ, red rice, a salad and a scoop of finadene for about US$12–18; go at 11:30 and check the shop is open the same day.

Plaza food court (type, Tumon Sands Plaza area, confirm locally)

A food court in an air-conditioned plaza is the easiest midday meal on the strip: many cuisines, seats, toilets, and cool air; go at 11:30 or 13:30 to miss the tour-group rush.

Hotel beach bar for sunset (type, confirm locally)

A hotel beach bar for a sunset drink and light food: go at 17:30, order a cool drink, and plan the walk back before dark; prices are resort prices.

Rescue anchors

6 places to rest · checked on a 40 m (130 ft) grid

A rescue anchor is a spot where you can stop and recover if the walk goes wrong: a bench, a café, a toilet. Every letter on the map is one anchor, and each has a card below. We check that any point in the cluster is within about 7 minutes’ walk of one, so you are never far from somewhere to sit down.

Nodes in this cluster

  1. Tumon Bay beach

Go in the morning, before 10:00: calm water inside the reef, shade thin after that; swim where a lifeguard or other swimmers are.
  2. Underwater World Guam

A rainy-day or midday stop: an indoor aquarium with a walk-through tunnel under the bay fish, good for children and heat, about 60–90 minutes; buy tickets on the day unless a package includes them.
  3. T Galleria by DFS

A big air-conditioned duty-free and luxury mall on the main strip: use it for a heat break, gifts and a rainy hour; nothing here is worth a special trip if the sea is calm.
